To support professionals working with disabled children, adults with learning disabilities and their families, Research in Practice has released several new open access resources and events for #LearningDisabilityWeek. This includes a new resource, co-published by Research in Practice and the Council for Disabled Children, the briefing explores the challenges faced by disabled children and families when requesting support. It also examines local authorities’ statutory responsibilities when assessing needs, applying eligibility criteria, and providing services. The briefing looks at the benefits of adopting a strengths-based and needs-led approach to assessment and key features of a needs-led eligibility framework and how this can inform a lawful and transparent approach to providing services for disabled children and their families. Professional & TEDx Speaker I Accessibility Consultant I Adapt-Ability Champ I Solution-Focused Mindset Coach l Author l Host of Parenting Done Differently Podcast l Researcher & Expertise in Parenting with Disabilities
“Assume I can and maybe I will” People with disabilities are not perceived as having the capacity to parent and raise children. They do not fit “the mold” or the standards. Yet some us are parents - and oretty good ones at that. But because Society doesn’t assume we can be… we are not offered services to support us in that important role. Because Society doesn’t assume we can be GOOD parents, we are over-represented in child welfare, and many of us will loose custody of our children - often WITHOUT ANY evidence of neglect or wrongdoing. It is time to change! Society… is you and me. SO… Assume that we can be parents. GOOD parents. AND Assume our children are thriving and learning important social skills with us, like teamwork and collaboration, like kindness and compassion, like creativity and innovation… and you will start to notice that this is TRUE. AND Watch my TEDx Talk on What we can Learn from Parent with Disabilities- that made it to the Top 50 of TEDx Talk for 2023. https://lnkd.in/d3aFjd-x START BELIEVING WE CAN. WE ARE ALREADY DOING IT!

Please take a minute to ask Congress to support better healthcare for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at https://lnkd.in/eUdxDZxh. From The Arc of the United States: People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have been left behind by our nation’s healthcare system. Compared to people without disabilities, people with IDD: ~ Have a harder time finding providers ~ Wait longer to get medical appointments, especially for dental and mental health services ~ Receive poorer quality care from providers who have little training in how to meet their needs The Healthcare Extension and Accessibility for Developmentally Disabled and Underserved Population (HEADs UP) Act—HR 3380—would designate people with IDD as a medically underserved population. It would unlock urgently needed federal resources to improve healthcare for people with IDD. It would help increase the number of healthcare providers who serve people with IDD by incentivizing doctors and dentists to treat people with IDD and by providing them with better training. It would also make healthcare for people with IDD a national priority for federal research. Urge your members of Congress to support the HEADs UP Act today at https://lnkd.in/eUdxDZxh ... Thank you!
