The importance of product market fit? Had a great chat with with one of our advisors, who was sharing about their experience working as a Design Engineer in a start-up based in the US. As the chief Design Engineer, he was responsible for research and development of a new device that would be targeted at surgeons performing vascular surgery, specifically open surgical procedures. By all accounts, they would be seen as successful having fundraised over USD 26 million over three rounds. In a short period of time they were forced to cease operations . Some of the lessons learnt: - In any development process, especially in Medtech, prioritising the must-haves and good to haves is important. Time is limited. - End users are important both in the feedback and development process. Understanding what clinicians as well as healthcare professionals are saying, not only in terms of the technology itself, but on a macro level, where and how the therapeutic area are moving. - There are different avenues to funding; VC, Angel. Ultimately it needs to be a fit for both sides. As a start-up it is important to ask why company x? What is the value beyond funding? Access to a network? Work out what is the best path for your side. - Having the right founding team is critical. Those with the vision, rhetoric WHY. Those will help carry out the vision, the HOW. - As Viktor Kyosev highlights velocity is key. Speed of innovation is critical. What is relevant today in a short period of time won’t be so relevant in the near future, as was the case with this start-up. The field has already moved to minimally invasive. - At the same time though, knowing that healthcare is unique and complex. Knowing when and how to slow down, to focus on areas such as regulatory, interoperability when it comes to digital, clinician and industry insights, both shared in detail by Dr. Derrick Khor Dr Terence Tan, MBBS, MSc, GDFM, GDOM. #medtech #startups #innovation

For companies developing SaMD for the US market, this is an interesting read. I was surprised that the majority of companies have only one FDA clearance and the fairly equal distribution between US and non-US companies.
