Can we stop being blinkered...Please! I have just spoken to a newly registered candidate today here at HQ Antella Travel Recruitment. A Senior Business Travel Consultant with 20 years experience, proficient using Sabre and Galileo. They were approached by one of their client's to work for them as their Travel Manager back in 2020. Was sadly made redundant in December 2023 and has been trying to re-enter Corporate Travel. They are being rejected with feedback : 'You haven't used a GDS for 4 years' OR 'You are too over qualified'. What is wrong with our industry? One minute we are crying we are lacking skilled and experienced applicants. And the next minute we are so blinkered when looking at candidates applications. 🙌 Any GDS can be re-taught within a matter of weeks. ❌ Stop telling applicants they are too over qualified. 🙌 We can change direction within our careers and no longer want to be in a senior management position. We want to keep our colleagues in our industry. 🗓 From Executive Chaos to Seamless Solutions🗓 As a C-level executive assistant at a dynamic tech company, I faced a challenging situation that required quick problem-solving skills. Our CEO had planned to attend an important international conference, but the initial travel plans fell through due to unforeseen circumstances. With only a week left before the event, finding a feasible solution became imperative. The initial challenge was not only the shortage of available flights but also last-minute accommodation. Realizing the urgency, I started conducting a thorough evaluation of alternative travel options. Leveraging my network of industry contacts, I reached out to travel agencies and airline representatives. At the same time, I worked closely with our CEO's preferences, understanding his schedule constraints and comfort preferences. With a limited budget and a high demand for accommodation in the conference area, securing a suitable hotel room proved to be a complex task. However, I persistently negotiated with several hotels, demonstrating my ability to strike advantageous deals while maintaining the highest standards. As the arrangements started coming together, I faced another challenge: obtaining the necessary visas and permits on short notice. Drawing on my experience in navigating bureaucratic processes, I promptly coordinated with embassy officials, presenting a compelling case for expedited visa processing. My attention to detail and proactive communication with all stakeholders ensured a smooth and rapid approval process. In the final stage, I devised a comprehensive contingency plan, taking into account potential disruptions such as flight delays or cancellations. I collaborated with the CEO's team, creating a communication protocol to keep everyone informed and updated. This foresight proved valuable as unexpected delays did occur, but the pre-planned strategy ensured minimal disruption to the CEO's schedule. Through a combination of strategic thinking, effective communication, and persistent determination, I successfully arranged a seamless solution for the complex travel dilemma. The CEO not only made it to the conference on time but also commended the efficiency and professionalism displayed throughout the process. This real-life situation highlighted my problem-solving skills and approach as a C-level executive assistant, showcasing my ability to navigate challenges with agility, negotiate effectively, and maintain composure under pressure. It reinforced the importance of meticulous planning, flexibility, and leveraging connections in resolving high-stakes situations in the fast-paced world of executive support. One of the questions I get asked the most as a travel therapy coach is "What do you wish you had known before you started traveling?" And more than anything else, I wish I had known: 👀 Exactly what to look for in a recruiter; and 🚩 All of the red flags to look out for Because working with the wrong recruiter can totally tank your travel therapy experience (and yes, I know this from experience). 👎 So, here's my advice: Only work with recruiters who come highly recommended by seasoned travelers who know EXACTLY what to look for in a recruiter. ATTENTION NEW GRADS! Thinking about becoming a travel therapist? Here are some things you should do and know while looking for your first assignment! Referrals are everything! Every company and recruiter will tell you that they’re the best – but wouldn’t that sound better hearing it from another travel therapist who has either worked for your recruiter or at the same facility you are considering? It’s super comforting and helpful when your recruiter introduces you to another therapist who had all the same questions and concerns you do and can give input from their perspective. Add 3-4 weeks to your timeline. Something to keep in mind when applying for travel assignments is that even after accepting a job offer, it takes an average of 3-4 weeks to get through all the compliance requirements before you can start working at the facility. We typically start looking for assignments 2 months prior to a desired start date! Furnished Finder is not the only resource. Furnished finder and Airbnb are popular options, but there are so many housing apps out there today. No matter what housing option you choose, always make sure the listing has been “verified” and check to see if there are any reviews listed. Be cautious of scammers! You can also find short-term apartment rentals or work with your recruiter to help book discounted, long-term extended stay at a local hotel or efficiency. Hope this was helpful!
