My vision when I set out to create Joberfer.com was to #democratize #referrals to #jobs. We launched Joberfer.com our #mvp to demonstrate how this idea could work. Working with our early employer partners we came up with the basic system to test our concept. Right out the gate we got enormous backlash from industry experts. “Take this idea to the back of the barn and shoot it.” I actually value this feedback tremendously. As a founder I got trapped into my massive vision of trying to win the entire jobs market (going across industries) from day 1. Instead of keeping a narrow focus, I went wide. My earliest employer partners were @Binance Canadá, @minerva ai Franworks Group of Companies , Shajani CPA , Riverbend Medical , Unify Medical , @condo bridge and others. Although all these partners received #qualified applicants, it was difficult to really assess the value of the platform and the quality especially because these partners spanned industries and each company focused on different qualitative criteria. Being a bootstrapped startup with limited resources it was difficult to focus on a specific client need let alone figure out the right metrics to track. The learning experience was steep. The revenue generated out of these early relationships helped extend our runway and bootstrap longer. For this I’m hugely #thankful to each of our employer partners from all industries we served… but it was becoming clear, we needed to demonstrate the real value of what we were creating not just function as a vanilla job board but prove our unique value proposition. Robert Boersma a dear friend from Talent.com shared with me an interesting article about “The Cold Start Problem”. It was a pivotal moment for me as a startup founder, as I finally understood what we were experiencing but could not really explain. I started researching more into this fascinating topic and came across Andrew Chen ‘s book on Audible The Cold Start Problem. It was exactly what I needed at the exact time. Everything started becoming clear and making so much more sense. Then I found myself in Madrid last October sitting around the table with the most incredible influential group of advisors and investors (wondering how in God’s name was I so lucky to be there) discussing Joberfer . Thank you Simon Baker , Gonzalo Del Pozo , Joe Hanna , Christophe de Rassenfosse & Javier Ortiz for taking the time and reinforcing the idea of keeping an uncomfortably narrow FOCUS. Today we are wiser, a little more experienced and a whole lot more FOCUSED on exactly what we are doing and WHY. Whereas the rider referral program got discount seekers, the drivers were highly money motivated. Because they were so motivated and signed up for larger referral bounties, they actually performed better after sign up. Even though referrals was 15% of sign-up they were well over 30% of first trips.
