Being proactive with pregnant ewes is important to ensure they are in top condition and able to produce high-quality colostrum ahead of lambing 🐑 Traditionally, it was thought that a ewe’s intake of forage declines through pregnancy due to pressure on her rumen from the growing lambs, however, there is some recent research showing that if the ewes are supplemented with top-quality forage this is not the case. In situations where forage is lower quality, supplementation is required. Forage analysis is key to making these decisions. Regular body condition scoring of the ewes helps farmers make the right choices regarding feed supplements and knowing how much additional feed they should be giving to the ewes. #Manusher_Jonno_Foundation (MJF) successfully observed #Breast_Feeding_Week in 26 unions of 3 hill districts from 1-7 August, 2024. To observe the week, #MJF’s Partnership for Resilient Livelihoods in CHT Region (PRLC) project funded by the European Union, organized #awareness_campaign. 1,446 lactating mothers participated in the campaign. Due to the adverse geographical location, poor infrastructure, limited access to public services, traditional social norms and superstitions about #pregnancy and #breast_feeding in the hill areas, most of the people suffer from #malnutrition. The aim of this campaign is to improve #nutritional_wellbeing of mothers. They learned importance of breast milk, benefits of colostrum, consumption of food during lactating periods and how to hold the baby during breastfeeding from the sessions. #Sustainable_Development

A study co-authored by Prof. Jayne Woodside, Professor of Human Nutrition, at Queen's University of Belfast, highlights that healthcare professionals and midwives are poorly equipped and do not provide dietary advice during pregnancy. There is a need for more focus, more knowledge, and awareness of the importance of iodine for health among women of childbearing age and healthcare professionals in the UK. Healthcare professionals and midwives need to: 🔹 discuss with women about the main dietary sources of iodine, and they need to consistently address dietary concerns during clinical care.  🔹have the knowledge and confidence to provide detailed information to pregnant women and women planning to become pregnant; this can help improve iodine status, which is particularly important in pregnancy.
