Back in January 2023, I had been laid off and was unsure of what was coming. I managed to land a few job offers with great roles, and ultimately chose on one. The thing is: the roles were evenly split between Data Science and Data Engineering. I knew DE was the road I wanted to go down, but hadn't formally worked in DE before and was worried about not being good enough. Fear. So, I took a contract job in DS. I made some amazing connections, and I really enjoyed my time getting to know the people and the organization. When it came time to convert, Data Science wasn't where I wanted to stay. I was getting more anxious by the day to work in the Data Engineering space. An opportunity came up, so I opened up LaFell's Data Solutions, Inc. and got to working with one client in the Data Engineering space on a big project. I was nervous, but I was excited. I was ready to work and learn. Now, here I am, Staff Architect with IQVIA, just 8 months later. I'm still learning, that hasn't stopped. I'm still falling on my face from time to time, that won't stop either. But, it's knowing that I am good enough which has gotten me here!! Our decisions made out of fear often times prevent us from achieving what we KNOW we can achieve. There's a lot of things I still don't know. But that's a good problem to have. We're figuring it out one day at a time. That's the best we can do.

Some of the data we get to work with at the MTA is, I have to say, just very fun. You get to see how the city moves, and there's so much richness that it takes a big community to really explore it. This is why we love our Open Data program: we get to put this data in the hands of New Yorkers (and folks around the world!) who share a deep interest in transit. This week, we are releasing a big (!) dataset that I think is especially exciting: the MTA's "pretty good estimates" of how riders are traveling across the subway system. It consists of "Origin-Destination" pairs that, as Julia Lynn writes in this blog post (https://lnkd.in/eUHPMgQm), estimate where riders travel across the city after they swipe or tap into a station. This is the same data that our own data scientists - including teams led by the esteemed Jay Krantz and Daniel Wood - use to plan service changes, shuttle routes, and more.
