As you may know, the total solar eclipse will pass over our region Monday April 8th, between the hours of 2:08 pm and 4:35 pm. 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗽𝘀𝗲 Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. NASA has outlined a few do’s and don’ts: • Do not look directly at the sun • Do not use homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses; even very dark sunglasses are not safe for viewing the sun • Use special solar filters, such as eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers, to view the eclipse • Read and follow recommended solar filter instructions and supervise younger children • In any stage of the eclipse, do not look at the sun through a camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical devices, and never use solar filters with these devices, as concentrated solar rays will damage them and can cause serious eye injury • Inspect your solar filter before use; if it is scratched or damaged, discard the filter If you should experience discomfort or vision problems following the eclipse, please visit your local doctor of optometry for a comprehensive eye examination. Day 1451: Why is there no sound in space? You cannot hear any sounds in near-empty regions of space. Sound travels through the vibration of atoms and molecules in a medium (such as air or water). In space, where there is no air, so sound has no way to travel. Sound, like light or heat, is a wave. However, one major distinction is that, unlike light or heat (radiation), sound needs a medium to travel. Sounds require the presence of molecules or particles to travel from one region to another. It is the outward vibration of these vagrant particles in the periphery of the source that accounts for the production and spreading of sound waves. A particle sauntering right next to a plucked string of a guitar is plunged into motion. This particle jiggles and transfers its kinetic energy to its neighbor, which then transfers it to his neighbor and so on, until the wave reaches the receptors in our ear and is perceived as a note. Therefore, the reason why sounds do not travel in space is because there are no particles to disturb in the first place. That being said, what about the gas particles, remnants from supernova explosions and other dust particles? Can’t they propagate sound? Oddly, no. These particles, unlike the particles on Earth, aren’t close enough or, to put it more elegantly, they aren’t compressed enough to communicate. Remember that space is virtually a vacuum, so the particles from the explosion are dispersed immediately and consequently aren’t dense enough to carry sound. Technically, a cloud of dust could carry sound, but the amplitude would be tremendously minuscule and practically inaudible to human ears. To an astronaut outside a spaceship, the spaceship’s explosion would be a confusing visual of blinding heat and light, but it would be devoid of any sound, a silent film. For anyone accustomed to the physics of Earth, this might induce cognitive dissonance. However, because the air inside the spaceship is compressed, the explosion could be easily heard by an astronaut inside. This is also why astronauts cannot shout out to their partners and must use special equipment that converts sound to radio when sending a message and radio to sound on the receiving end. The Odysseus Lander broke a leg on landing it seems because a laser guidance system was inadvertently left inactive meaning the crafts systems did not have a precise lunar altitude. That said, the first US moon landing in 50 years is a fantastic achievement for Intuitive Machines and I understand that thankfully the payloads are operational but the events made me cast my mind back. I am of a generation that remember the first computer games were often based around a lunar landing, from an initial height and set of velocity vectors the player had to fire thrusters in bursts to arrest horizontal flight and descent at a low enough velocity to land safely and intact, if you burnt all the fuel you would crash into the surface. The game was primitive but the problem space was real and showed how complex it was. In July 1969, the Apollo 11 mission had to deal with unexpected 1202 programme alarms during the descent to the Moon which could have lead to an aborted mission if not for quick thinking on the ground leading to the alarms being effectively ignored. Soon after that Armstrong visually identified that they were heading towards a rocky landing area which is likely to have spelt disaster for the mission so at 650 ft with a descent rate of 20fps he switched to manual control, then 10 seconds later at 430 ft he triggered P66, a semi automatic landing mode, the LM was still moving forward at 40mph. Then after 60 seconds the low fuel light came on which indicated 30 seconds of fuel remaining. After 150 seconds in P66 the contact probes touched the surface and Armstrong switched the engines off with the LM's four feet planted in the dust. Armstrong then said, “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed” to which Charlie Duke in Houston replied, “Roger, Tranquility. We copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We’re breathing again. Thanks a lot". Aldrin replied with a simple, “Thank you”. If manual control had not been exercised and if Armstrong had not had the skill to achieve a safe landing the LM could have broken a leg or toppled which would have sealed the fate of Armstrong and Aldrin and tragically impacted the subsequent Apollo missions. Today’s computing power is vast with a typical smartphone eclipsing the capability of the Apollo Guidance Computer AGC. The dilemma is that a manned mission requires supremely high confidence in the guidance and flight systems but at the same time it was human intervention by Armstrong and human interaction with the team back at Houston that made Apollo 11 the success we all know and celebrate. #Odysseus, #AGC, #lunarexploration, #Apollo, #Apollo11, #lunarlander

It’s in a tantalizing place. - https://lnkd.in/gAiKxFjv - A NASA telescope orbiting our planet has spotted an intriguing super-Earth — a world some 30 to 70 percent bigger than Earth.This rocky planet is in another solar system 137 light-years away, which in the vastness of space is considered relatively close (a light-year is nearly 6 trillion miles). The exoplanet, called TOI-715 b, is about 1.5 times the size of Earth. And, crucially, this world orbits inside the habitable, or "'Goldilocks," zone."That’s the distance from the star that could give the planet the right temperature for liquid water to form on its surface," NASA explained on its website. "Several other factors would have to line up, of course, for surface water to be present, especially having a suitable atmosphere." This reveals their existence, and other planetary characteristics. Rocky worlds around cooler red dwarfs are ideal places to look for environments that could potentially host conditions suitable for life, because they tend to have shorter years (such as 19 days), and these quick orbits provide better odds for a telescope like TESS to detect their transits."At the moment, they’re the best bet for finding habitable planets," NASA explained.
