In the DJ booth today for SCOPE and ClinEco is Dan Braga, Sr VP of R&D at Medidata. He's leading the charge in modernizing the clinical trial experience by focusing on interoperability to enhance user workflows. Dan's team's recent win of the "Site Innovation Award" at SCOPE underscores the importance of balancing technology with user-centric design.
Key topics discussed include:
- Healthcare data interoperability: Bridging clinical research and healthcare data
- Utilizing AI for improved trial design and management
- Connecting insights to workflow to revolutionize traditional trial management systems
Addressing the universal industry pain point of siloed data, Dan emphasizes the significance of leveraging interoperability to streamline workflows and enhance user experiences. It's a crucial goal for the entire industry. Great insights from Dan on the future of clinical trials!

Hey everybody, this is Micah Lieberman coming at you live again. This is we should just stand. We should we should have a radio of fake radio station name and play the hits. But we kind of are playing the hits everybody. Today my guest, DJ and life science expert is Dan Braga. He is the senior VP of R&D at metadata. And we talk about trends. Sometimes when I'm working on scope, I think three or four weeks ago we were talking about scope and I was kind of doing my market research, talking to friends from pharma, metadata, big zeros, technology companies. I try to find out what's happening. And I learned about what people are doing. So Dan's always working on interesting things. So everybody say hello to Dan. Dan, welcome, man. Thank you very much. Thanks for having me. Appreciate it. All right, so easy question, what do you do? What are you working on? Because senior VP of R&D is broad and metadata is huge. It's that you guys are all over the place. So tell me what does that mean? What are you working on? Yeah, great question. So I am I. Primarily cover two things on the first being healthcare data interoperability and that's a new area of focus for for Medidata and really brand new to the clinical research industry. We're working on bridging that gap between, you know, historically siloed clinical research data and even more historically siloed, you know, electronic health records and you know, healthcare data for patients at institutions. So we believe that data that lives within an EHR should flow. In a secure and compliant way into an EDC, therefore eliminating all the manual data entry that, you know, the industry is asking sites to do on a day-to-day basis. We were fortunate enough last year to win the scope site innovation award for Knology and we're continuing to, you know, double down on that and and worked to bring that to the industry. It is brand new. So anything that's brand new, as you can imagine, the adoption curves are, you know, change just a little bit where you know, working through big sponsors on, you know. Change management processes and how to introduce new technologies like this but. Overall, something we're really excited about the other area focus for me is in our, you know, call it the the traditional clan OPS or, you know, trial management CTS space where again, we're looking to change the game that that metadata and. You know, yes, still focus on the traditional CTMS functionality, oh, you know, what CTS should do, but in in combination of that, really start to pull in a lot of AI planning and design capabilities as part of a broader trial management experience. You know, we believe that it doesn't matter how good your CTS is or how you know. You can never execute a trial the proper way if it was designed, you know, poorly up front. So we're building 1 unified experience that pulls into trial management, a lot of planning and design capabilities powered by AI, and then secondly, within that space, really working on connecting those insights to work flows. One of the big problems in the industry today is. It's it's easy to surface and insight shouldn't easy, but surfacing an insight is one thing. We believe that when you surface an insight, you need to connect that to workflow, take that insight and connect it. Hey, here is 25 sites that we think you should use for your trial. Would you like to start the the site startup process now, you know, and kind of connect, you know, A to B? So those are my two areas of focus. One would say they're a little bit different, but we believe they all are different. But but yeah, I could see the vision, right. And also you mentioned a few things, you know, connecting site connecting, connecting to the workflow because often what happens is you have these. Ideas of like with all this data, we've all this intelligence and then there's you could see where you're going to go, but then there's also that reality that your pharma clients, that your friends in biotech are where they're at the same time. I just need to keep rolling. I do want to design A better house, but I still need a kitchen to cook. And you're trying to do both like you're trying to like, you know, live in the house while painting it, live in the house while fixing the kitchen and it's difficult. So what are you working on the most? Like I, I shouldn't say that you're working on everything. And I don't want to put you on the spot and say what's most interesting to you now. It's like saying, which one of your kids do you like the most? But what is like, I mean, I asked this question when I'm working on scope. All of us is, is, you know what? Are those pain points because we have this big audience and this big community and they have shared struggles and they're trying to figure out where are we going and how does their struggle that company, how do I learn from them? What does that shared. So what if one of those key came key pain points that you are seeing and that will probably tackle its scope? Yeah, I mean if you talk about like what am I working on most, it's really. Anything to improve workflow and experiences. We are very experienced, focused. It doesn't, you know, developing yet another tool or yet another widget or yet another solution, whatever you want to call it is not what we're interested. We're interested in consolidating a lot of capabilities and functionality into experiences, you know, Medidata, we're very well known for our patient experience, you know, with, with my Medidata. You know, we launched a new experience earlier this year around data management, the clinical data studio and now very focused on the trial management experience. So I'm very interested. I spend a lot of time on that just thinking about not salute, not functionality and capabilities and new products, but how you can make everything work under one. Connecting the dots, man. Yeah, you used the word earlier, silo data. Yeah, yeah, everybody's getting better at it. Exactly. So I'm very, very experienced focus. And then secondly. You know. Within that kind of same spirit, how do I connect disparate healthcare organizations to to what we did today? You know, we have some pretty unique things on your capabilities in terms of how we connect to healthcare organizations and how we add scale. No sponsors interested in a technology, when you go to them and say, hey, we're connected to 1% of your sites or 5% of your sites, they say, hey, come back when you have some scale. We have that scale now in terms of, you know, a number of sites are connected. Is it's really all about experiences. And finally, I think all of that can be kind of bundled under one statement of I just really want to modernize the clinical trial experience. You know, it's sites today and most solutions are doing the same thing they were 25 years ago, logging into some system and manually and you know, filling out, logging into too many systems. Want to modernize that experience and that may be in a world where, you know, you're only working out of Epic, you're only working out of, you know, your EHR, maybe you directly within your HR, you're you're able to, you know, kind of participate in clinical trials. So that's another experience that that we're working on. We just want to take things to the next level, leverage all this interoperability that's out there and provide, you know, a much more efficient experience for everybody involved in clinical research. Yeah, and I think, I think that's a universal struggle. And a universal goal and desire. I mean, from 10 years, some people at some, like you kind of allude to the fact that the fact that some things have not changed, but a lot has. But I do want to also credit you with the shout out to Bridget and our Site Innovation award, because that's new. Because the discussion of the burden, we have to also realize, like we love technology. We keep seeing all these things we could solve, but eventually when you have too many tools on your tool belt, you're not. Enable it. It's becomes a burden. So I just love in general keeping it real getting back to the human experience of who's actually executing this trial. The patients matter, the volunteers matter. What is their burden? What is the site burden? What does this cost as how do we do so connecting the knots is not only data, it's the experiences, it's the people, it's the stakeholders. So it's this is a universal struggle man. So yeah, give a fun job, Dan, you have a fun job. Thanks for thanks for talking about it and I'll see you in February, obviously so. Sounds great. Thanks for having me. Appreciate it. All right, see you. Bye. Bye. Bye.
Excellent interview! The topics discussed are very insightful and timely, especially highlighting the relevance of utilizing AI tools to enhance clinical trial design and management. They can significantly improve the experience for everyone involved in clinical research, making the process more efficient and effective.
