I would like to share this interview of Dr. Duane Gubler and Dr. Ooi Eng Eong by the Asian Insider. One point highlighted in this interview is the impact of the quality of urban living conditions on arboviral transmission. Most Dengue prediction models rely heavily on environmental aspects but do not include socio-economic factors that are intertwined with the quality of the living environment, inside and outside of the homes. The next generation of arboviral infection risk prediction models will need to incorporate these parameters https://lnkd.in/eSPvzpZp

Day 4 of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) observership and our observers worked hard today on real life cases where they had to do a #genomic investigation of an outbreak and decided what were the appropriate actions and decision to take and #recommendations to provide. It was an intense day with fast paced decision-making. No free afternoon. Fatigue kicks in after 4 days 😴 but the observership is not over and tomorrow, they will learn about #SDG target diseases and #strategicforesight and hear some reflections of the future #threats to public health. #Antimicrobialresistance #genomicsurveillance #outbreakinvestigation #phylogenetictree #ECDC4PublicHealth #ECDCObservership10

Immunologist | Microbiologist | Biomedical Scientist | Science Communication | Medical Education | Public Health Consultant
My first article for my monthly column in Skeptical Inquirer is out! Inside Immunity will be a monthly column featuring discussions on topics in science and health that are complex, controversial, or misunderstood. One of the MOST misunderstood topics in infectious diseases is Lyme disease, and it’s because of a complex multi-decade effort by activist groups masquerading as patient advocates that promote (and profit off) fallacies about this bacterial infection. They sell fake commercial tests, get kickbacks from unqualified practitioners after referrals, and those practitioners “prescribe” harmful and ineffective treatments that people pay out of pocket for. In this piece, I discuss the basics of Lyme, how it is transmitted, the true risk of illness, diagnosis, treatment, and some examples and red flags of Lyme pseudoscience (using the recent Bella Hadid story). Please take a read and let me know your thoughts! You can find it at: https://lnkd.in/eUnkj5Yt #scicomm #lymedisease #womeninSTEM
