"Our advisory committee decided that we needed the ability to customize VR simulations the way we want to run it. That's really the primary reasons we selected Acadicus, was the ability of faculty and sim techs to design whatever scenario they would like, just like with a high fidelity simulator." Kim Ernstmeyer Director of Open RN and a Nursing Instructor Chippewa Valley Technical College "We decided, after looking at a number of VR platforms, to go with Acadicus. Number one, you have an editor that allows us to create our own scenarios and adjust existing scenarios to our needs." Jeffrey Jacobson, Ph.D. XR Lead of Immersive Design Systems Boston Children’s Hospital "It never worked for us to go with other VR systems that are catalogues, where you have to work with their pre-scripted scenarios." Paul Cusick Director of Technology in the School of Allied Health and Nursing Minnesota State University, Mankato "I've tried a lot of other VR software, and I don't like having to trust someone else to meet my student's needs. Their needs are individualized, just like our patients when we provide care." The thing I love about Acadicus, is it allows me to build individual scenarios that meets my student's needs, meets my community's needs, meets my school's needs, and not focused on what someone else thinks is the best thing for my students, who never met them." Mitch Luker Nursing Simulation Coordinator Northeast Wisconsin Technical College There's nothing pre-programmed or one-size-fits all about clinical experience. How should we define realism when we simulate nursing practice? You could argue that with today's clinical site restrictions, they are not getting realistic clinical practice. In result, nursing schools have to advance their realism capabilities by adopting new technology that puts students in the shoes of the RN while in school. Immersing the student in the full RN role inside of a VR simulation may be more "realistic" than having your student observe at the real clinical site. Many think that VR is trying to "replace" real clinical practice which should never happen. I more think of it as a tool that could validate a student's access to real clinical practice at the clinical site for example. What are you thoughts on the clinical hours allowed for substitution with simulation today? #NursingSchool #Nursing #Nurse #NursingSimulation #NursingEducation #Clinical #Healthcare #VR #VirtualReality #AI #Artificialintelligence #CoursetaVR #TactileVR

In about 2 weeks it´s time for my first international speaking engagement at the 6th Maruzza International Congress on Paediatric Palliative Care in Rome together with SABH (Sjukhusansluten Avancerad Barnsjukvård i Hemmet) from Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset. I´m excited to join an international group of experts when it comes to palliative care of children and share insights, findings and best practices. The title and topic of my presentation is "VR in Palliative Care within Home Healthcare for Children and Adolescents" detailing our work offering VR activities within SABH to promote distraction from symptoms and treatment, stimulate creativity, encourage joy in movement and enhance quality of life. Some of our findings: * General experience: The majority of participants described the experience as very positive. * Social interaction: The VR experience contributed to positive social interaction within the families. * User-friendliness: The VR equipment was easy for the children to use. * Comfort and safety: The children were comfortable using the VR equipment, and no safety issues were reported. This work is among the most meaningful work I do, to be able to (in whatever little way) support families going through a period that is unimaginable for most. Again - I reiterate this very important point that everyone that has heard me speak or knows about my work has heard: It´s not the technical equipment in itself that is the point - it´s the inner experience, be it pain relief, joy, amazement, a creative spark or simply "visiting" a place that will never be visited again in the physical - that the VR-experience can be a pathway for. For the user, but also for the family members participating in the room while the session is taking place - or through shared experiences. VR is simply _one_ of many tools and practices facilitating such inner shifts, but a very good one used in the right way. In our conclusion a good VR-facilitator is important for such sessions. One that can primarily "read the room" (remember - !human needs first!) but that also has good technical knowledge of the hardware and more importantly _the software_ to be able to guide the user safely and hold a space with ease.

The basic terms described in this article really allow one to understand the available tools we have ready at hand. Upon feeding the creative minds in our team, we are able at #UGent to establish the potential applications of control engineering in service of humanity, in collaboration with Dr MD PhD Martine Neckebroek from Ghent University Hospital. More specifically, we develop control strategies for clinical environment including anesthesiologist in the loop. Beyond the #ERCCoG AMICAS project, we are working on building an interdisciplinary extended reality environment including real-time parallel computing solutions and interacting humans (anesthesiologist, surgeon, patient, control engineer).
