Can't wait for tonight's The Rowett Institute's Andrew Carnegie lecture series by Henry Dimbleby at University of Aberdeen. Henry is another invaluable voice among the UK’s food industry leaders. Consumers must have transparency. The best strawberries I've ever eaten were from the Fife, available for around 6 weeks in June/July. But you can buy strawberries year round - from Central America or Spain or who knows where. The thing is, the nutritional content of the freshly picked versus the far off-shore is so dramatically different, they each should not be called a strawberry. Also, much of the massed produced bread has had extraordinary nutrition removed over the last 30 years. It shouldn't be called 'bread'. The technology to measure and report these differences is here. With leaders like Henry driving the conversation, we can transform the food system together—arming chefs and consumers with the truth and giving them the power to choose. Many thanks to the wonderful Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne FRSE and Michelle McWilliams for enabling this invitation.
Do you worry that the modern diet is destroying our bodies and our planet and we're not moving fast enough towards a less damaging food system? Campaigner and author Henry Dimbleby does and he'll be telling us what's wrong and how we can fix it in the Andrew Carnegie lecture on November 6. Tickets for the free event are available now: https://lnkd.in/ehDy7QFe It is a particularly special occasion for us at the The Rowett Institute as the talk is timed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to our founding director, Lord Boyd Orr, for his own work pushing to end hunger and improve nutrition at home and around the world. Boyd Orr's present day successor as Institute Director, Professor Julian Griffin, will lead a discussion panel with Henry after the lecture that will also feature Prof Alex Johnstone and Food Standards Scotland chair Heather Kelman. We very much look forward to welcoming you to the University for this exploration of one of the biggest issues of our age - part of a lecture series funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York to mark its centenary.

Milk! What's the first thing that came to mind? Cow milk? Soy? Oat? Goat? Human? In this episode of #IdiomsOfNormality on traces&dreams, I interview Dr Andrea Wiley about her work on the production, distribution and consumption of cow milk! This fascinating interview is a great explainer of her work, and a really mind-opening look into a global industry that is... well... rather abnormal when you come to think about it... https://lnkd.in/g9C8usny

Are we really drinking our way to longevity with a glass of red wine? Resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, has been at the center of this debate. Here's what science says: - The Concept: Initially discovered in grapes, resveratrol gained attention for its potential anti-aging effects in laboratory studies. - Reality Check: While lab results in yeast and mice were promising, reproducing these effects in humans has proven challenging. - Dosage Dilemma: The beneficial amounts of resveratrol observed in studies far exceed what humans would safely consume through wine. Post 1/3: Thank you for sharing this insightful piece. It's enlightening to see campaigners like Henry Dimbleby addressing the critical issue of our modern diet's impact on both our health and the planet. The urgency to shift towards a sustainable food system cannot be overstated, and Dimbleby's upcoming lecture promises to shed light on actionable solutions. The modern mainstream diet industry has long been failing those in need of real solutions. With a predominant focus on calorie counting and exercise, these approaches have been ineffective for decades. It’s time to move the goalposts. Did you know that exercise can actually slow weight loss? Here are some eye-opening examples: Walking 35 miles burns just one pound HIIT requires 4.5 hours per pound Cycling demands 49 to 100 miles per pound Yet, this information is rarely shared by those promoting exercise programs. Over 90% of foods don’t cause weight gain when consumed in moderation, so why not focus on the 10% that do? #WeightLoss #Exercise #HealthyHabits #WeightLossProgram #Mindset #HealthyEating
