That’s one side of the mirror. In fact when I became a doctor I had plenty of time to speak and TALK with my patients And a few hours to burocratic work. Nowadays we have plenty of time in computers trying to assess digital plataforms to fill, in order to “serve” a huge hierarquy of informatics and administrators. And the time to speak, talk and empathise with patients, be came shorter and shorter. That’ s a way of practice medicine that is no more actrative and is perhaps a pervasive form of practicing medicine. Doctors are humanistic scientists, not burocratic performers. That is why many of them gabe and give up actually. In adition they wont be autonomous and not beeing manipulated by patients and administrations.

DON'T become a doctor. That's what 20+ physicians told me when I worked in the hospital.🏥 I asked them, "If you could go back and do it again, would you still become a doctor?" The answer was overwhelmingly "NO." 😲 Their reasons? 👉🏼 Lack of autonomy 👉🏼 Stressed and unhealthy 👉🏼 Frustrated at the system 👉🏼 Single without time to date 👉🏼 Overworked and under paid 👉🏼 Divorced twice after 10 years 👉🏼 Missed out on a decade of life 👉🏼 Not enough time with their kids ...............And the list went on................ What does it take to build a successful medical practice? In my opinion, if you don't get the culture right, then nothing else matters. Culture = environment, attitude, and behaviors of your organization. It is comprised of your . . . Purpose = why your team exists. Mission = where you are headed (goals). Core Values = how your team should behave. If you haven't given any attention to your purpose, mission and core values, then you're setting the stage for a toxic culture. Many organizations have their purpose, mission statement, and core values, buried somewhere on their website. They might as well not have them. So what goes wrong? In my experience, it starts with a lack of consistent communication from leadership. Every 90 days at Pazona MD Urology we close our office for a team meeting. We have gratitude shout-outs, review our accomplishments, and gather for a happy hour. But most importantly, I always review our . . . ✅Core values: Gratitude Resourcefulness Accessibility Curiosity Exceptionalism ✅Core purpose: Accessible healthcare with a smile. ✅Mission: to scale a clinical practice which delivers an exceptional patient experience into multiple markets (abbreviated version). ✅Why: the U.S. healthcare system is fragmented and broken. It's this last point that is crucial. If your team doesn't know "why" you're doing something, then before you know it, your culture will erode. "Why" are we trying to grow our practice? Because . . . 🚫Healthcare is broken and we need to help as many people as possible. 🚫The reimbursement model is broken and we need to build a financial moat around our practice to survive. 🚫There are many exceptional healthcare professionals who would love to work in a practice like ours so we have a moral obligation to create a job for them. This slide never leaves my quarterly presentation. Our "why" helps us weather all the mistakes (yes I've made a lot of them), challenges (thanks again Change Healthcare), and frustrations we face as a team. This stifles innovation and progress in our field. Here are my thoughts on how we, as a collective, can change this 💪 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 👏 Celebrate team successes in patient care and research to highlight collective achievements. 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 🤓 Use platforms like LinkedIn to share lessons learned and best practices, framing successes as educational opportunities. 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬 📣 Highlight stories of healthcare professionals whose innovations have led to better patient outcomes, showcasing success as beneficial to all. 𝐅𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 🤝 Encourage a culture where achievements are acknowledged openly in meetings and communications, emphasising the positive impact on patient care. Celebrating successes as learning opportunities and emphasising collaborative achievements can create a culture that inspires and advances healthcare. Principles of Practice Success: Continued.... Patient Experience Step 1 So if we have to begin each of the 5 principles of practice success with "beginning with the end in mind." Unless there are some other suggestions out there?? Then what is "the end" we envision with the patient experience? There is no right answer here and can vary on your model or goals. If I were building a practice and was the lead provider or practice manager (someone who can truly influence an authentic outcome) my focus would be solely on the words I would desire most to hear. Words matter, whether in our minds, out loud to us or friends, or in a review. What would be the ideal outcome in words for every patient visit in my opinion? "Wow, I really felt like they cared about me." The emphasis on this is "They". The patient is the hero first and the team is the hero second. A provider and practice manager are just the guides for each (See Building a Story Brand by Donald Miller for insights on Hero's and Guides it is amazingly applicable to the obstacles we face in the healthcare world and not for the reasons you think :). Now that we have the ideal, we can work our way backward from the educational (I don't like to use the word marketing but that is just me) materials to the phone call to the checkout and everything in between.
