One of my goals this year is creating DEIA guidelines for our events at Zillow. This is something I'm passionate about personally and has been more on my mind since the launch of theneuproject.com a few years ago. There are a few things I'm keeping top of mind: - How can we anticipate what others may need and want to feel included? The onerous shouldn't be on the individual to request accommodations. - What are ways we can offer options so people can select what is best for them? Let's make it personal! - It doesn't have to happen all at once. Small things can make a BIG difference. Thinking through options doesn't cost anything but does take effort and awareness. I'm excited to take this first step, to see what I discover, and implement new options to help make our events more inclusive and accessible. Joining the club!! Here's my 2024 LinkedIn Rewind, by Coauthor: In 2024, I learned that standing firm on your principles isn't just good for wellbeing - it's good for business too. When we launched SensoryCalm three years ago, many questioned if proper neuroinclusion could be profitable. This year proved them wrong: • 9,000+ visitors supported through supervised spaces • £200,000 revenue generated • 9.5/10 customer satisfaction score • 97 net promoter score from visitors • Silver at MIT Awards 2024 for Best Diversity & Inclusion But the real impact? Watching event organisers move from treating neuroinclusion as a checkbox to understanding it as essential infrastructure. This time of the year is full of conferences and events where everyone gathers to learn and network with peers and leaders from different organizations. However, many of these don’t seem to be inclusive of the diversity that these conferences attract. Proper audio-visual setup: In a recent conference I attended in Bengaluru, I was standing at the end of the large hall trying hard to hear what was being spoken on the stage. I realized that the AV setup was not strong enough to cover the large hall and people with hearing impairment had a hard time as they were unable to grasp, and so was I. Somehow, a DEI conference missed out on the opportunity to tap into a large section of the delegates, both who were sitting in the seventh row and back and those with a hearing disability. A quiet room: Our conferences are crowded and full of excited folks. The people count is high, the energy is high and the rooms and passages eventually get cramped. This can get overwhelming for those with anxiety. I know I cannot stand a crowd unless on stage. Neurodivergent and neurotypical folks can equally use a quiet room to get away for a minute and come back into the social setup to mingle again. Gender-neutral washrooms: Okay, most conferences happen in hotels that are yet to grasp the concept of a gender-neutral washroom. I hear you. However, the accessibility washroom can be doubled up as the gender-neutral washrooms. Hygiene announcements: We start the conferences with gusto unmatchable. However, one forgets to announce the basics like emergency exits, the location of washrooms, quiet rooms, breakout session rooms, etc. God forbid, there’s an emergency evacuation, we will be as clueless as we are when trying to find the washrooms awkwardly asking the hotel staff or other delegates to guide us. Inclusion of artists from underrepresented groups: if you have a sociocultural section planned, opt for performers and artisans from underrepresented groups. The visibility that you provide them will help them connect with us, the delegates. If you haven’t planned it, please do. It helps in easing out after a long day of heavy content. Accessibility: We’ve made a headway in this section for sure. Thanks to government guidelines, most hotels and convention centers have the basics of ramps and other essentials. We now should enhance it and make the stage and lunch/dinner buffets accessible. If you are in the corporates and are sponsoring a conference, partner with the organizers and work as one team. Discuss these points and more to elevate the game. If you are an organizer, make a checklist and include these finer points. This is just the beginning. For the last month or so, my perceived value of networking has skyrocketed. The take-off was when I rented a desk at Mindpark in Gothenburg. Even though I was just there for a month, I formed a handful of professional relationships that I think will last a long time. With that behind me, accepting Oskar Eklind's invitation to the Focus AW he hosted in Stockholm for his clients was a no-brainer. The only facilitation Oskar did was the following: Split us into two smaller groups and make us answer the following questions: — What do I do? — What do I need help with? — What can I help with? The outcome was inspiring. Going into the conversation, our only known common ground was Oskar and our work with him. But as you can guess, we had a lot more in common than that. We chatted nonstop for a couple of hours, sharing ideas and new perspectives. We learned about ourselves and the others. And we all got a hand-picked book from Oskar. I left with a smile on my face, with an intriguing book in my hand – and above all, with nine new helpful and inspiring contacts in my network. Well worth 10 hours on the train. Ps. Every Event is Neurodiverse, Because Every Event Has People! When we talk about neurodiverse events, it’s not just about whether neurodivergent people are attending. Neurodiversity is the diversity of all human brains, it’s how we think, process, and experience the world. Every event is neurodiverse by default because every event brings people together. And people bring unique ways of thinking, feeling, and interacting. By designing events with inclusivity in mind, we don’t just make them accessible for neurodivergent attendees, we make them better for EVERYONE. Quiet spaces, clear signage, thoughtful navigation, and sensory-friendly design aren’t “special” features, they’re human features, that respect the diverse ways we all thrive in shared environments.
