The latest Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) report on women in academic medicine is out, and here are the key findings: **Significant Progress in Representation: As of 2023, women are the majority of applicants and graduates at U.S. medical schools, marking a positive trend towards gender equity. **Rise in Women Faculty: Over the past decade, the percentage of women faculty has increased from 38% to 45%, with women with PhDs in clinical science now at 52%. **Leadership Roles: Women now represent 27% of U.S. medical school deans, 34% of division chiefs, and 45% of senior associate deans. However, only 25% of department chairs are women. **Challenges in Pay Equity: Despite progress, women still earn less than men, with race/ethnicity factors contributing to pay disparities. **High Rates of Gender Harassment: Nearly one in three women report gender harassment in academic medicine, significantly varying by specialty. This is really cool and necessary work, and this, unfortunately, looks very similar to other academic and non academic professions. Pay inequality and glass ceilings are all too common, but these numbers illustrate the stark reality real fast. Bringing more transparency in real performance reduces this drastically, as the folks at Performica continuously demonstrate. Anything that uncovers and illuminates merit, and makes the data unavoidable would, and more importantly should, close this gap. And vaporize glass ceilings, while we're at it. It will be interesting to see how folks at Faculty Analytics enable performance transparency in the academic world.
