Interesting article on annual checkups from the WSJ earlier this week. Two quotes that caught my eye: "Plenty of doctors still recommend an annual checkup, but more are changing what they do in that appointment, focusing on habits such as sleep, exercise and diet with less poking and prodding in a physical exam." "A review in the medical journal JAMA found that overall, checkups weren’t linked to lower mortality rates or improvements in cardiovascular problems, although they were linked to better catching and treating of chronic disease." As a reminder, many health plans cover a number of preventive screenings and treatments at no cost. While the argument about long wait times for appointments is valid, regularly seeing a primary care physician or nurse practitioner still holds value, especially given the rise in cancer diagnoses (now occurring at younger ages) and the difficulty patients face in managing chronic diseases. https://lnkd.in/gtRfP_My

"Why are you worried about primary care? You are just a specialist" - when 25% of your clinic encounters with your patients are spent on figuring out how they can get their meds refilled, or get their routine health checks the way it is supposed to be.. - when a large number of patients are experiencing poor access to care because of the current serious concerns affecting primary care. - the specialists get referrals through primary care. How will a patient get access to a neurologist if they can't get hold of a primary care doctor? - when patients are worried, shouldn't we all be worried? - when our family doctors are worried, shouldn't we all be worried? - primary care is our only arm for preventive medicine in healthcare. If primary care is not working well = more strokes, more heart attacks, and more medical comorbidities. I am worried. And you must too! #canadianhealthcare

Did you know your pharmacist can prescribe medication for short-term health conditions like acne, cold sores, tick bites, or acid reflux? It's been just over a year since the Ontario government expanded the powers of pharmacists to prescribe medication for minor ailments, in an effort to ease the burden on Emergency Departments and walk-in clinics. TeamUHN Pharmacists have since seen a positive impact on their work and patients. "We can now apply our training and clinical knowledge to take on a greater role in improving health outcomes."
