Barrow Neurological Institute was the second-leading enrolling site for the first multicenter prospective study of the diagnostic accuracy, feasibility, and safety of robot-assisted #transcranialdoppler (raTCD) versus #transthoracicechocardiography (TTE) for right-to-left shunt. #Righttoleftshunt (RLS) is a type of irregular pattern of blood flow in the heart. RLS, including #patentforamenovale (PFO), is recognized as a risk factor for #stroke. PFO describes a small opening between the upper two chambers of the heart. TTE is the standard of care for the diagnosis of RLS. The study, published in the American Heart Association's journal "Stroke," found that raTCD was about three times more likely to diagnose any right-to-left shunt, including large PFO, as compared with TTE. TTE failed to diagnose approximately two-thirds of the large right-to-left shunts diagnosed by raTCD. #PetznickStrokeCenter Director Michael Waters, MD, PhD, a co-author on the paper, said Barrow provided the highest quality data for the study.
