As we move through August, markets are proving to be volatile, driven by several key factors. From the Fed's delayed interest rate cuts amid weak economic indicators, to the unwinding of the AI and yen carry trades, U.S. and Chinese consumer retrenchment, rising geopolitical tensions, and an unexpectedly tight U.S. election race—investors face uncertainty on many fronts. Despite this, the fundamentals remain strong. The Chief Investment Office continues to see tailwinds for Equities moving forward, including a sustained earnings recovery, broadening market leadership, still relatively stable consumers, healthy balance sheets and credit markets, and the potential easier monetary policy later this year. The U.S. economy is resilient, and remember that volatility can present long-term opportunities.
