Today, Calgary’s BMO Centre at The Calgary Stampede Park is ready to welcome the world, officially becoming Western Canada’s largest convention centre with the grand opening of its 565,000 sq. ft. expansion. After four years of construction, the over 1M sq. ft. facility opens its doors creating an architectural landmark, and making gatherings even greater with the ability to host larger conventions. The first major event, the Global Energy Show Canada, is already loading into the expansion’s exhibition halls in preparation for their event on June 11th, and there are 500 more conventions and events booked to date. This also means more business for restaurants, shops, rideshares and other attractions. The economic impact to Calgary is estimated to be upwards of $100M/year. New exhibition design by FACTORY! When does the past end and the present begin, and what exists in the in-between? The nature of time is often explored through the lens of both permanence and transience. How does the fluidity of memory, which is deeply subjective, shape the process of art-making? If there might be an aesthetic that expresses the complex relationship between loss, time, and solitude, how would it look like? What visual or conceptual elements would it involve? An Ode to Absence is an exhibition that explores these questions. By considering the notions of “lack” and “longing,” the exhibition delves into how these themes can articulate the nuances of temporal experience and the conceptual weight of absence. Featuring works drawn from private art collections, An Ode to Absence is an exercise of a curatorial methodology that seeks to create connections between seemingly disparate pieces to reveal underlying themes that might otherwise remain obscured. Through this process, the curatorial approach transforms individual pieces into a narrative that invites viewers to contemplate the time as an interplay between presence and absence, and the dimensions of the ephemeral and the enduring. This MEND grant investment in Brighton is going to make such a difference. The Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND) is an open-access capital fund targeted at non-national Accredited museums and local authorities based in England to apply for funding to undertake vital infrastructure and urgent maintenance backlogs which are beyond the scope of day-to-day maintenance budgets. It has provided critical investment for museums up and down the country. As one museum director told me, ‘I didn’t come into this job to spend all my time moving buckets to catch the water coming in through the roof’.
