📣 Today there is exciting news for the VCM – IETA has officially launched its Guidelines for High Integrity Use of Carbon Credits. These guidelines set out the ways in which corporates can accelerate climate action efficiently. Acceleration has never been more urgently needed. IETA, through AlliedOffsets research, flags that 81 percent of companies have not yet set any climate targets. We hope these guidelines serve to encourage the world’s corporate laggards to make haste and double down on their climate mitigation efforts. IETA also found that among the companies which have set targets, emission reduction goals for Scope 1 and 2 have been exceeded by an average of 26 percent per year. This shortfall in emission reduction could be mitigated, in part, using high integrity carbon credit purchases, driving much-needed finance to climate and nature projects that are making a huge impact towards global goals. At Respira, we are fully committed to IETA’s new guidelines (aligned with VCMI’s Claims Code of Practice and the recent Science Based Targets initiative announcement) and see huge potential for this work to help encourage further corporate action, aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement. 📣 Step back in corporate climate actions ❌ Climact shares the concerns of many actors that Science Based Targets initiative latest decision could lead to a decreased corporate decarbonisation ambition ⛔ Companies have an essential role to play in decarbonising not only their own activities, but also work together with their partners, employees & clients to decarbonise their value-chain in line with climate-science. 🔹 Scope 3 (indirect emissions) decarbonisation is not easy. However, many possibilities already exist today to reduce scope 3 emissions. 🔹 Increased flexibility in using traditional offsets would thus be a step back in incentivising corporate climate action. 🔹 It is also a false promise for EU-companies since ESRS E1-4 asks to disclose targets based on gross emission reductions without taking into account any removal or avoidance credits. We look forward to the release of the concrete guidance Science Based Targets initiative announced to better understand what types of attributes can be used in which situation to make a final verdict on the credibility of this change in course of SBTi. Companies (and public authorities) need to continue the work of decreasing carbon emissions, even from scope 3, even if it means significant business evolutions. The priority is to phase out fossil fuels, rapidly. Not to use offseting. Solutions exist and need to be strenghtened.

❓ Q: What are VCMI’s Foundational Criteria? 🙋♀️ A: Aligned with the long-term goals of the #ParisAgreement and representing current best practice for corporate #ClimateAction, the Foundational Criteria consist of prerequisites for any company seeking to make a VCMI Claim. An IIGCC working group co-chaired by Robeco and HSBC AM has warned of "perverse outcomes" from investors looking to cut Scope 3 emissions of their portfolio, with the risk of decisions that have a major impact on Scope 3 at the portfolio level but no real world impact. The group is looking to develop sector-by-sector guidance on how to determine materiality of different Scope 3 categories as well as “complicity” – the responsibility for and influence over each category that a sector has.
