One of my favorite ways to invest is through exchange-traded funds (ETFs). They may not get the same attention as individual stocks, but they can be just as effective at helping you build wealth, often with much less stress along the way. Instead of picking individual stocks, dealing with company-specific risks, and making dozens of investments to achieve diversification, you can invest in a broad ETF and check off multiple boxes at once. It's a win-win, if you ask me. Below are my two favorite ETFs for November. One is growth-focused, and the other is dividend-focused. They're a great one-two punch. Image source: Getty Images. 1. Vanguard S&P 500 Growth ETF The S&P 500 is one of three major U.S. stock market indexes, alongside the Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones. It tracks the performance of the 500 largest public U.S. companies. The Vanguard S&P 500 Growth ETF (VOOG 2.52%) is somewhat of a subset of the S&P 500, focusing solely on the growth stocks within the index. VOOG data by YCharts Many people think of growth stocks as small and emerging companies, but the "growth" label has nothing to do with size. It's all about a company being able to increase its earnings at a higher rate than its industry average and the broader market. This ETF is a great example of combining stability and growth. Being in the S&P 500 means the companies have reached a certain level of maturity and market fit, which is key to sustained growth. It doesn't exempt them from down periods or volatility, but it does add a certain level of reliability. The ETF is market-cap-weighted, so you'll notice major tech stocks make up a lot of it, and the tech sector in general is heavily represented. That's the dichotomy these ETFs are offering, too. From a big-picture perspective, you have two choices when it comes to investing: You can invest broadly, or you can fine-tune your selections to better meet your specific needs. The first way largely means widely diversified index funds; the second means cherry-picking stocks or selecting an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that does that for you. This is the dichotomy on offer in the dividend niche when you compare Vanguard High-Dividend Yield ETF (VYM 0.55%) to Invesco S&P 500 High-Dividend Low-Volatility ETF (SPHD 0.60%). Here's how to decide which option is right for you. What does Vanguard High-Dividend Yield ETF do? Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF is an index-based exchange traded fund. The index it follows is the FTSE High-Dividend Yield Index. The fund charges a minuscule 0.06% expense ratio for doing this. The real question for investors is, what does the index do? Image source: Getty Images. FTSE High-Dividend Yield Index is pretty simple to understand. First, it selects all the dividend-paying stocks in the stock market. Then it removes real estate investment trusts (REITs), which seems odd, since they are specifically designed to pay dividends. After this step, it lines up the dividend stocks it has left, from the highest yield to lowest, selecting the highest-yielding 50% of the list for the final portfolio. The portfolio is then market cap weighted, so the largest stocks have the greatest influence on the ETF's performance. This is akin to taking a shotgun to dividend investing, noting that the Vanguard High-Dividend Yield ETF owns over 500 stocks. That provides broad diversification, but with so many stocks, it ends up diluting the ETF's dividend yield, which is only around 2.8%. That's higher than the tiny 1.2% you'd get from the S&P 500 (^GSPC 0.38%), but you are definitely giving up yield to get diversification with this ETF. Invesco S&P 500 High-Dividend Low-Volatility ETF lives at the opposite extreme, as it is highly selective. For starters, as its name implies, it fishes within the S&P 500 pond for its holdings. You don't need to have years of experience to invest in stocks. That's both a blessing (anyone can do it) and a curse (the risk is usually higher if you're not sure what you're doing). That said, there's a way for you to safely invest and learn at the same time using exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that are tied to major indexes. But it may pay to be just a little discerning with the ETF you buy. Here's why. The Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF is the everything fund One of the first things you should wrap your head around when it comes to investing is that you are going to make mistakes. New investors may be tempted bet big on one stock thinking it can turn them into a millionaire, but a get-rich-quick mentality often leads to heartache. Luckily, there's an easy way to diversify in the stock market: exchange-traded funds. And one of the most popular options is the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI 0.43%). This ETF tracks a broad swath of U.S. stocks with a portfolio of more than 3,650 securities. It is market-cap weighted, so the largest companies drive the fund's performance. The largest holding in the ETF, Apple, makes up about 6% of assets, and other Magnificent Seven companies round out the top five. The expense ratio for this ETF is just 0.03%, which is as close to free as you can get on Wall Street. This isn't a bad option, but most new investors will probably be better off with something a little more selective. Enter the S&P 500 index Instead of buying nearly everything, you can cherry pick the 500 biggest companies that, as a group, are most representative of the U.S. stock market. And the ETFs tracking the S&P 500 index, such as the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO 0.43%) or the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY 0.42%), are the most popular options on the market. If you go this route, you're honing in on the most important companies while still getting the benefit of diversification as a new investor. The two options highlighted above are very similar with one main difference: The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF's 0.03% expense ratio is lower than the SPDR S&P 500 ETF's 0.09%. In early 2021, the stock price of video game retailer GameStop pumped immensely after a Reddit community of traders, led by a trader known as Roaring Kitty (or DeepFuckingValue on Reddit), started buying en masse. This in turn caused the demise of hedge fund Melvin Capital that was shorting GameStop stock (shorting, in the simplest of terms, is betting on the stock price declining). It also marked the beginning of a trend in which communities of smaller traders were able to substantially move the prices of certain stocks, often opposing the directional bets of larger entities such as hedge funds. That was the dawn of the meme stock era. While the trend was short lived, largely dying down in late 2021, it now appears to be back. On Monday, after nearly three years of dormancy, Roaring Kitty’s account on X started posting a series of memes and crypto video excerpts. While it’s hard to discern what, exactly, each of them means, the consensus is that Roaring Kitty is back in business, and stock traders have taken notice. Tweet may have been deleted After lingering in the $10 to $18 region for nearly the entirety of 2024 so far, the price of GameStop (whose stock ticker is $GME) soared to $80 in the past two days, before settling down at the current (premarket) price of $51.31. The price of another meme stock, AMC Entertainment, more than doubled at one point, following Roaring Kitty’s return. Mashable Light Speed For those who were shorting $GME and $AMC, the news was not good. According to Predictive Analytics’ Ihor Dusaniwsky, shorters are down well over $2 billion this week. Tweet may have been deleted How can one man’s tweets move stock prices so violently? Keith Gill, Roaring Kitty’s real name, achieved fame by holding a long position (essentially, betting on the price rising) in GameStop for years, turning a relatively meager $53,000 position into tens of millions of dollars and gaining a cult following in the process. The question on every trader’s mind, however, is whether the trend of meme stocks pumping is sustainable, or if it’s a one-off event spurred by Roaring Kitty’s return (some have pointed out that Roaring Kitty hasn’t been active on other social channels such as YouTube, indicating someone else may have been tweeting from his account). Roaring Kitty’s Twitter account is still posting riddles, with some Reddit traders capitalizing on the stock price moves. The ranking of Robinhood on Apple’s App Store has gone sharply up in the past couple of days, which is another indicator that retail investors are back (in early 2021, Robinhood soared to the top of Apple’s app store as numerous investors joined in to trade meme stocks). Vanguard is making many investors happy these days. Forty-two of the 86 exchange-traded funds (ETFs) managed by the company have delivered double-digit total year-to-date returns. Sixteen Vanguard ETFs claim total returns of at least 20%. What's the best-performing Vanguard ETF of 2024 so far? Top contenders You might be surprised by some of the top contenders in Vanguard's family of ETFs. For example, the Vanguard Utilities ETF (VPU -0.76%) ranked as the best-performing Vanguard ETF of 2024 throughout much of the past few weeks. Its total return as of this writing is 25.7%, enough to land it in the third spot among all Vanguard ETFs. Utility stocks usually aren't the most exciting performers. However, mounting anticipation that the Federal Reserve would lower interest rates and ultimately an actual rate cut by the Fed provided a nice tailwind for the utilities sector and the Vanguard Utilities ETF. Nearly all of this total return is due to share price appreciation since many of the stocks owned by the ETF either pay no dividend or relatively small dividends. Three stocks have been especially important to the Vanguard Communication Services ETF's banner year. Facebook parent Meta Platforms makes up 23.2% of the ETF's portfolio. Its share price has soared roughly 58% year to date. The class A and class C shares of Google parent Alphabet make up a combined 21.1% of the Vanguard Communication Services ETF's total holdings. Both Alphabet stocks have jumped 21% in 2024. The best-performing Vanguard ETF so far this year However, no Vanguard ETF is outperforming the Vanguard S&P 500 Growth ETF (VOOG 2.52%) this year. This ETF's total return tops 28%. Its share price is up over 27% year to date. VOOG data by YCharts The Vanguard S&P Growth ETF attempts to track the performance of the S&P 500 Growth Index. This index includes members of the S&P 500 classified as growth stocks based on sales growth, momentum, and the ratio of earnings growth to share price. This Vanguard ETF currently owns 234 stocks. Its top five holdings are Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, and Meta. These stocks together make up around 45.8% of the ETF's portfolio. Nvidia has been an especially big winner this year with its shares skyrocketing 175%. Here’s what you need to know: 👇 BlackRock has set the fee for its spot Ethereum ETF at 0.25% of the fund’s net asset value, accrued daily at an annualized rate becoming the latest to submit their S-1 form on July 17. The fee is said to be payable at least quarterly in US dollars, in-kind or a combination of both. The iShares Ethereum Trust could waive all or a portion of the fee for a certain period of time. It will start with a 0.12% fee for the first 12 months or until it reaches $2.5B in assets, whichever comes first. Other issuers have also announced their fees: 🔸 Franklin Templeton: 0.19% 🔹 Bitwise & VanEck: 0.20% 🔸 21Shares: 0.21% 🔹 Fidelity & Invesco Galaxy: 0.25% Many issuers are offering fee waivers at launch: 🔹 VanEck: 12 months or $1.5B in assets 🔸 Bitwise: 6 months or $0.5B 🔹 Franklin: Until Jan 31, 2025 or $10B 🔸 Fidelity: Until Jan 1, 2025 Grayscale's spot Ether ETF fee remains at 2.5%, but their new Ethereum Mini Trust will charge 0.25%. According to Grayscale, 10% of its spot Ether ETF will be allocated into its Ethereum Mini Trust, thus providing a seed capital of $1B. Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas expects S-1s to be signed off next Monday, with trading potentially starting on Tuesday, July 23. If approved, spot Ether ETFs could be listed on Nasdaq, NYSE, and CBOE. Bitwise’s CIO, Matt Hougan, predicted spot Ether ETFs could gain up to $15B in inflows in the first 18 months. Research from Morningstar pointed to a “Trump bump” that helped U.S. funds including both ETFs and mutual funds take in $115 billion in November, the highest total since April 2021. The S&P 500 rally, buoyed by the Magnificent Seven stocks — Apple, Microsoft, Google parent Alphabet, Amazon.com, Nvidia, Meta Platforms and Tesla — helped account for about half of the index’s gains for the year, according to data and analytics company VettaFi. Four of the top 10 ETFs for 2024 by flows track the S&P 500 index, according to Cerulli. The Vanguard 500 Index Fund ranks No. 1 for 2024 year to date inflows, according to Cerulli, followed by iShares Core S&P 500 ETF, iShares Bitcoin Trust, Invesco QQQ Trust, Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund, iShares Core US Aggregate Bond ETF, SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF, Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund, Invesco S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF and Vanguard Growth Index Fund. Malcolm Ethridge, a certified financial planner and founder and managing partner at Capital Area Planning Group, said he often uses S&P 500 ETFs in client portfolios because they allow for access to company names that would be in any large cap growth strategy for significantly reduced costs. While an actively managed fund may charge 50 or 75 basis points, a passive S&P 500 ETF may only charge 10 basis points. The S&P 500 index, which has had a record run, may be poised to continue to do well as the index rebalances to reflect current market leaders. “I think this is a case where SPY [SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust] probably outperforms the majority of fund managers in 2025,” Ethridge said. However, the S&P 500 may not match the “historically rare” double digit gains we’ve seen in the past two years. The median S&P 500 forecast from Wall Street banks calls for gains in the high single digits. Moreover, the Magnificent Seven and mega cap technology companies that have driven recent gains may see their returns start to diminish. “Investors will continue to embrace S&P 500 ETFs for their low fees and unmatched liquidity, but I think the torrid pace we’ve seen into the typical broad-based vanilla funds will likely slow a bit in 2025,” Chang said.
