𝐒𝐔𝐂𝐂𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐔𝐄𝐒 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐎 𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐒 2023, a decidedly complex year for the wine market, is not yet over, and companies and trade fair players are already looking towards a 2024 which everyone hopes will be a full relaunch. Kicking off the big fairs will be 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 & 𝐕𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬, edition no. 5, on stage from 12 to 14 February at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, with the flagship show of the Vinexposium group. The French fair is 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐩 and is increasingly establishing itself internationally as one of the great reference fairs for the wine scene. For the 2024 edition the 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠: a 72% growth in terms of participation of international exhibitors, 50 producing countries and a 28% increase in exhibition spaces. 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐈𝐍 𝐃𝐔̈𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐃𝐎𝐑𝐅 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 In the next few days it's time for ProWein 2024; a 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 for the fair which has been the undisputed leader of international wine fairs for years and which today must redeem itself, given the under-performing 2023 edition. According to many, in fact, 𝐕𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 could become the new main international wine fair, thus replacing ProWein in Düsseldorf. The latter would consequently return to being mainly a fair for the 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 and would act as a privileged meeting point for numerous markets in Northern and Eastern Europe. The German fair will be held from 𝟏𝟎 𝐭𝐨 𝟏𝟐 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 and will once again see 𝐈𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲 as the protagonist, with over 1,190 registered exhibitors, although down compared to previous editions; followed by France (743) and Germany (708). Wine trade shows, BOOMING or DECLINING? Even though it might seem like the latter, I have researched some statistics from the most prominent trade shows in the sector to answer this question with data. Here is what I found: 🍷 The "Queen Trade Show" ProWein Düsseldorf. This year, 49,000 people attended, 11,000 more than the previous year 2022, but 12,000 less than in 2019. In several charts from the organization showing the evolution of attendance and participation in this event since its inception in 1994, it is clearly seen how both increased year after year. It was only from 2019 when the decline began due to the pandemic. 🍷 The “Fancy Trade Show” Vinexpo Paris Vinexpo Paris was inaugurated in 2020, with the aim of surpassing its predecessor Vinexpo Bordeaux, which recorded a 30% decrease in the number of exhibitors and visitors in its last edition in 2019. In the case of Vinexpo Paris, the data seems encouraging; more than 36,000 attendees in 2023 (35% more than in 2022), a 20% increase in floor space, and an 18% increase in exhibitors. 🍷 The “Spanish Taste Trade Show” Barcelona Wine Week The trade show from my homeland also recorded a slight increase in visitors in 2023 and a 27% increase in exhibiting companies compared to its first edition in 2022. What will happen in 2024? Will pre-pandemic figures be achieved? I will undoubtedly be there to see it; in Düsseldorf, in Paris, and, of course, at the Barcelona Wine Week. Vinexposium is back in Hong Kong, starting next week from 28 to 30 May with #vinexpo Asia. This return takes place in an unstable economic and political context. The global wine and spirits industry faces numerous challenges, with production and consumption in constant decline, and significant, multipolar geo-economic issues. This return to Hong Kong also carries a particular message. It is essential to ease rising tensions, especially between China and Europe, to promote trade. Harmonious cooperation between these two economic poles is indispensable for ensuring mutual and sustainable growth. Vinexpo Asia aims to be this platform for dialogue and collaboration, where industry players can work together to overcome challenges and seize business opportunities. 🍷 Strong Australian Presence at Vinexpo Asia 2024 Wine Australia proudly led a contingent of 63 wineries from 31 regions to Hong Kong for Vinexpo Asia 2024, the leading trade exhibition for wine and spirits professionals in the region. This event saw participation from over 14,000 trade visitors across 60 countries, providing a platform for exhibitors worldwide to showcase their brands. The Australian Wine Pavilion has become a key feature at this event, allowing producers to connect with influential buyers, importers, distributors, and sommeliers globally. 🍇 Growing Opportunities for Australian Wines in Asia Paul Turale, Wine Australia’s General Manager of Marketing, emphasised the importance of in-person connections for the wine sector. He noted the strong interest from the trade in the diversity and quality of Australian wines during the three-day event, highlighting the optimism surrounding opportunities in Asian markets. The new Australian Wine national branding, which embodies the adventure and diversity of Australian winemaking, was also unveiled, adding a fresh appeal to the pavilion's presentations. 🌟 Positive Feedback from Exhibitors Exhibitors like Kim Chalmers from Chalmers Wines, Paul McArdle from Small Wonder and Wayfinder, Bruce Tyrrell from Tyrrell’s Wines, and Lyndall Rowe from Riverland Wine shared their positive experiences at Vinexpo Asia. They reported high interest and engagement from visitors, particularly from mainland China, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan. Great to join Trade and Investment Minister Joe Szakacs for the media announcement ahead of his visit to Vinexpo Hong Kong regarding Australia re-rentering the China market. For Wirra Wirra Vineyards it's terrific that our wines will be available for Chinese wine lovers again. China also joins the USA, UK, Canada, Malaysia, Korea and EU as major markets for us, along with nemerous smaller but valued markets. Having a diverse market mix means that if some are down others are up, providing great resiliance and economic sustainability.
