Today, I had the privilege to discuss cybersecurity with Mr. Eghosa Agbonkina I picked his brain so much this time 😌. We touched on many topics, including the ISO/IEC 27001 and COBIT frameworks. ISO/IEC 27001 is an international standard for information security management systems (ISMS) that provides a systematic approach to managing sensitive company information so that it remains secure. It is a joint effort by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Imagine you run a popular ice cream shop, and you keep customer information like names, addresses, and favorite flavors in a computer system. One day, you hear about a rival shop that had its customer data stolen by hackers, and you're worried it could happen to you too. How ISO/IEC 27001 can help: Think of ISO/IEC 27001 as a master security blueprint for your ice cream shop's data. It gives you step-by-step instructions to protect your customers' information. 1. Locks and Keys (Access Control): Just like you lock your shop at night, ISO/IEC 27001 tells you to set up strong passwords and user permissions to control who can access the data. That means only trusted employees (like managers) can see the full customer list, while others can only access what they need for their job (like taking orders). 2. Security Cameras (Monitoring): You install security cameras to keep an eye on your shop. Similarly, ISO/IEC 27001 advises setting up systems to monitor and log access to your data. For example, you use software to track who logs into the system and when, catching any unusual activity quickly. 3. Regular Drills (Testing and Review):You conduct regular fire drills. ISO/IEC 27001 recommends regular security checks and audits to ensure everything is working as it should. Every few months, you review your security measures and update them as needed, just like practicing your drills. By following ISO/IEC 27001, you make sure your customers' data is safe, which builds trust and keeps them coming back for more ice cream. COBIT on the other hand, is like an IT super manager that helps align your technology with your business goals, improving efficiency and security.
