Are all team sports really team sports? Watching the Olympic Games has got me thinking about team sports. A team is a group of people with different but complimentary skills, which when integrated should allow the team to perform well. Team members directly impact the performance of each other and have a high degree of interdependence. All of this is clearly seen in basketball teams, football teams, rugby teams, etc. But what about swimming teams, fencing teams, relay teams? In these teams each member has pretty much the same skill and there is less direct impact on the performance of each other and the team’s performance is a result of the addition of the individual performances.
