https://lnkd.in/eADmjD8n While browsing another topic my search engine brought up a vlog on exercises for the more mature tennis player. While I agreed with him that most online providers don't cover the needs of this group, his recommended exercises failed the functional litmus test on two counts 1. They were in one plane only, forward/back, instead of all three planes. 2. They ignored the fact that the whole body operates as a chain reaction in human movement in upright function. Exercising one link in the chain in one plane of motion will not prepare an athlete in their prime, let alone a maturing recreational player, to play better for longer. See my vlog on preparing to play/serve based on my more than 12 year study with the Gray Institute and in particular their 3DMAPS https://lnkd.in/eWU5XwGV

Visual processing speed plays a vital role in tennis, as it allows players to quickly interpret visual cues such as the trajectory of the ball, the movement of their opponent, and the positioning of themselves on the court. Players with faster visual processing speed can anticipate shots more accurately, react more swiftly, and make split-second decisions during matches. Training exercises that focus on improving visual processing speed, such as reaction drills and visual tracking exercises, can help tennis players enhance their performance on the court. https://lnkd.in/gvzG_svQ

Peripheral vision is crucial in tennis as it allows players to anticipate the movement of the ball and their opponent without directly focusing on them. This helps players react quickly and efficiently during fast-paced rallies. Practicing drills that improve peripheral vision can enhance a tennis player's ability to track the ball and anticipate their opponent's shots. https://lnkd.in/gvzG_svQ

Comment “BOOK” I’ll send you a link to get my book “Core Fundamentals of the Natural Athlete” i.e. the foundation of the Non-Linear System. All this time, we thought lining up sideways was the key to a killer backhand. Wrong. It’s all about that 45-degree angle. Time to rethink our stance, literally. Raise your hand if you’re fed up with traditional tennis teaching methods leaving you and your peers lined up for hip replacements. You thought sitting in a chair and swinging your arms was the key to mastering the one-handed backhand, right? Well…not so much. Let’s be real—if success on the court was just about following old-school advice, some of the best players from our era wouldn’t be swapping tennis tales in the doctor’s office post-hip surgery. The problem isn’t your dedication or your love for the game. The problem is ALIGNMENT. Hear me out. Adopting a side-on stance for your backhand isn’t just outdated; it’s a straight path to injury. The KEY to longevity and power in your game is lining up at a 45-degree angle. This isn’t just about technique; it’s about working *with* your body, not against it. By engaging your hips and following through properly, you’re not just improving your backhand; you’re safeguarding your future—on and off the court. It doesn’t matter how many hours you put into practice if you’re compromising your body’s natural movement. Starting to align at a 45-degree angle can look like… → Adjusting your foot placement → Practicing hip engagement → Focusing on fluid follow-through → Incorporating non-linear motion into your drills But it’s probably not going to happen by sticking to outdated methods. So if you want to keep smashing winners without giving the medical industry a boost, it’s time for you to check out the Non-Linear System. And when you start to think "Maybe my backhand technique is causing my pain"... Grab my book “Core Fundamentals of the Natural Athlete” and explore a pain-free approach to tennis. Comment "BOOK" for the link. P.S. Ever experienced discomfort with your one-handed backhand? Share your story below and let's discuss how to improve! #beyondtennis #tennis #tennisfundamentals #tennistips #tenniscoach #tennistraining #tennistechnique #tennislesson #tennispro #tennisplayer #protennis #learntennis #playtennis

I help you to discover how to build your confidence, coaching skills and leadership strengths to achieve your ambitions.
With my coach developer and dressage judge hats on, I was interested to listen to a a podcast on judging biases. (I will put the links into the comments). Dr Inga Wolframm’s paper studied dressage judges at elite level but it also raised interesting points for many sports - not just other aesthetic and subjective ones such as gymnastics and figure skating, but also for referees in team sports. Decision-making in all these has to be very fast and is highly dependent not only the position of the judge/referee but is also subject to bias. Before anyone starts to get hot under the collar, it is worth repeating that biases are generally subconscious. The cognitive short cuts that the judge has to make can lead to a cascade of different biases. The amount of information coming into our brains at any time far exceeds the amount that we are able to process - this is why the brain makes these short cuts. First we have to perceive what is happening, then to encode and give meaning to that stimulus and finally to integrate the information into something meaningful for the context. Research into biases isn’t new, and we can name them in myriad ways but Dr Wolframm talks about five key biases in her paper: patriotism, ranking or order of competing, reputation, memory and conformity. I suspect that, at this point, any of you who referee or judge will be thinking, ‘ah yes….’ Separate research has followed what a particular judge is looking at (for example, the horses legs or the rider in any particular movement). This is all part of how we cope to get our final judgement in a split second whilst taking on a huge cognitive load. So, what can we do? Well, some sports have TMOs, VAR and so on. At elite level dressage there are judges overseeing judges. Ultimately we might have to change how a panel of judges work. For now, it is a good start to be aware of these biases, aware of what we need to be watching and to remain as guardians of the core principles of our sport. Whatever sport that may be.
