As someone with a hidden neurological disability, I've learned how challenging it can be to be open about a condition that isn't immediately visible.
Often, it feels like people are constantly judging us because they can't see the inner struggles or pain. This invisibility can make us question whether we truly deserve the help available to disabled individuals, even though we might be suffering as much, if not more, than those with visible disabilities.
Wearing my sunflower badge has been a powerful step in acknowledging my journey. It serves as a gentle reminder to myself and others that not all disabilities are visible.
For many of us with hidden disabilities, there’s a daily pressure to appear "normal" on the outside, even when we’re battling significant challenges on the inside. The sunflower badge symbolises an important shift towards greater awareness and understanding.
It encourages conversations and fosters a more inclusive environment where people feel seen, understood, and supported, regardless of the visibility of their condition.
To everyone out there with hidden disabilities, I see you. Your struggles are valid, and you deserve the same compassion and support as anyone else.
Let's continue to wear our sunflower badges with pride and advocate for a world where hidden disabilities are recognised and respected.
And remember, July is Disability Pride Month. Let's celebrate and honour the diversity and strength of our community. 🌈💪

In case you wanted to attend this author talk but were unable to do so, here's the recording of it.
There is usually more than one way to look at something. Disability is one such example. This author talk, hosted by the CASY Sparks online community at Yale University, delves into how my outlook on my own disability as a late-identified autistic changed rather dramatically as a result of listening to others in the disability community.

July is Hidden Disability Pride Month, a time to recognise and celebrate the resilience of those living with invisible disabilities.
To everyone who is navigating the world with a hidden disability: you are seen, you are strong, and your experiences do matter.
As someone who lives with hidden disabilities, I’m often faced with the challenges faced by "masking" and the pressure to simply "get on with things."
The constant discomfort of explaining why certain tasks are difficult can be overwhelming. Often, it's easier to stay silent and push through, even when it's not in my best interest.
Hidden Disability Pride Month is a reminder that the struggles and experiences are valid, even if they aren't immediately visible to others.
Where we can try to embrace our full selves and help to create an environment where we feel comfortable, safe and supported to be open about our needs.
Things I will do this month (and probably every month)
⬆️ Raise Awareness: Chat more about hidden disabilities and the unique challenges faced by those who live with them.
💚Promote Inclusivity: Advocate for policies and practices that support accessibility and understanding in all areas of life.
🤗 Support Others: Reach out to my friends, family, and colleagues with hidden disabilities, offer a simple bit of empathy and understanding.
Let's stand together this month and beyond, and help to create a culture of acceptance and pride.
PS* Yes it has taken me 8 days to write this and try to get everything I want to say in one post…

July is Disability Pride Month- A month to strongly reflect on how barriers disable us- NOT our impairment/s (although the impact is real).
Being out and proud in the workplace is risky as there are very real environment and attitudinal barriers to inclusion, opportunity and promotion for disabled people. However, if we are not out as leaders than we are not visible. And if we are not visible than we cannot be what we cannot see.
Pride Month is a great month to reflect and act on promoting, encouraging, building and investing in Disability Leadership.
Because if “We CAN see it, we can BE it”!
