You may be asking yourself: why is OTC Narcan such a big deal? Several reasons, but imagine this: a parent has an at-risk teen who is using drugs, but due to stigma is embarrassed to talk to a pharmacist or their doctor about it. Now they can literally just take it off the shelf at Target, go through the self-checkout line without talking to anyone, and be prepared in the event of an emergency to prevent a tragedy. Game changer. I’ve said it before - when we know that 80% of teens who die by overdose are found in their own house or a friend’s house, if you’re the parent of a teen you should have naloxone in your medicine cabinet. Access is now better than it’s ever been before, and that’s an incredibly good thing.
