It is a big step forward that the views of the neurodiversity moment are being aired in a mainstream news source. A few errors about what the neurodiversity movement is about: we’re not saying Autism is not a disability we’re saying it’s not a disorder. We know from listening to lived experience that it’s not good for children to grow up thinking there is something “wrong” with them. So we tell them they are different and they need some accommodations and some skills to live their best life. Also, the neurodiversity movement is not newer than the DSM criteria for Autism! It was founded at the Autism Rights movement back in the 1980s which branched into acceptance of all neurotypes. 30 years of Autistic lead research and ideaology which lead to our understanding of monotropism as a theory of Autism and the double empathy theory. Disability is experienced differently by every Autistic person and may vary at different times of their lives. Disability is reduced or eliminated when support needs are met. Disability also considers the person’s experience and not the caregivers experience. We want high quality life for all Autistic people no matter what that involves. This is where the medical people and the funding bodies get confused because some needs are very different to others. Autistic professionals in Allied health work tirelessly to provide neurodiversity affirming services. We advocate for AAC as a human right, we advocate against the use of ABA, we advocate for social inclusion at schools and strong bonds with caregivers. If we thought Autistic people were not disabled we wouldn’t be needed at all! That is not the case. The neurodiversity moment should not be the “opposite” or working against the medical model perceptions. Instead we need to be included in the conversation about the way Autism is classified and terminology used to reflect different care needs, not be placed in opposition to that. Nothing about us without us.
Sharing some of my thoughts on this topic today.

My blog for Diverse Educators about neurodivergent (ND) masking. I think knowing more about how ND pupils mask is the key here - if we understand what it is and some of the behaviours that could emerge when the mask slips, we are more able to support pupils to feel like they can be in school. I have written this from my own experiences as both a ND person and parent, and a teacher of many ND pupils over the years. I shared an article recently of the high numbers of autistic pupils refusing school: this is what we are trying to prevent by being more aware of the difficulties ND pupils face, even when they present like everything is okay. #neurodiversity #teachertraining
