Yesterday, I had the privilege of presenting a collaborative paper at the III BRICS Research Conference (BRICS Research Institute South Africa), held in China. . It was an important milestone in my academic formation, as the event brought together scholars from around the world, engaging with different perspectives, approaches, and topics of interest. . Our primary goal was to highlight the significance of urban studies as a key element for grounded policymaking, and for other forms of planning cities in a way that promotes socioeconomic development. . I would like to express my gratitude to my colleagues, Dr. Livia Antipon and Dr. Ndivhuho Tshikovhi, for their contributions to this special moment. Additionally, I must acknowledge the fundamental role of São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) in supporting the scientific advancement of my research. . Bellow is the abstract of the paper. I hope you find it insightful! . "It is widely known that the harsh conditions of work and income have a direct impact in the lives of the Global South urban poor populations, especially in the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) countries. The paper then delves into urban studies to understand how public spaces are used in urban Brazilian beachfront areas by these populations. The reflection encompasses not only the role played by small-scale economic activities in public spaces, but also how they continuously shape and reshape the built environment of the urban beachfront areas. In this sense, the Brazilian city of São Luís was chosen as the empirical setting while a qualitative investigation was conducted on the sandy beaches along Litorânea Avenue. Diverse strategies for work and income were identified during the research. Ranging from street vending to makeshift kiosks on the boardwalks, these initiatives include the local sale of meals and diversified merchandise. The findings suggest that public spaces are crucial livelihood areas for the urban poor population since they use these places due to easy access and the necessity of making a living. The results of the paper, therefore, pave the way for local urban planning policies aimed at addressing the socioeconomic development of the most vulnerable social groups in urban beachfront areas of Brazil today".

Congratulations to Roei Yosifof for the excellent presentation of the paper "Macro-scale Urban Spatial Openness Index (USOI)", whom he co-authored with yours truely and Professor Dafna Fisher Gwirtzman. The paper discusses a new method for measuring perceived density at the urban scale, which is the base of our joint exploration into ML based urban analysis. The paper was presented in the #SpaceSyntaxSymposium 14, and I have to say it was amazing to meet this unique research community. Kudos Roei! link to the paper in the first comment

On Friday 24 January, Sophia Feriani will defend her PhD thesis ‘Environmental noise prediction for urban planning' – and you’re invited!🚀 Environmental noise pollution in cities is a public health concern affecting a large portion of the urban population👂 In the European Union, mandatory strategic noise mapping has been introduced to evaluate the extent of the issue in large European cities🔊 However, issues persist, because the conventional methods used are not adapted to predict the noise distribution at a small urban scale. Feriani aims to establish a methodology to accurately simulate noise propagation and analyze the impact of urban sound sources at the scale of a street or a building🏢 For this purpose, she has employed and developed the nodal discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (DG-FEM). Find practical details in link in the comment section 👇

Thrilled to share my another paper, published at Springer Nature's Theoretical and Applied Climatology | Impact factor: 3.1. The study is on the Dhaka Metro Politan (DMDP) area incorporating remote sensing and machine learning. The random forest prediction model detected a rise of 3°C land surface temperature rise in 2030. Here is the link of the paper. Take a look at it and if you have any queries let us know. https://lnkd.in/gNRFvPr4

🎉One of my greatest milestones in 2024🎉 I am thrilled to announce that our paper, "Impact of Neighborhood Urban Morphologies on Walkability Using Spatial Multi-Criteria Analysis," has been published in the esteemed indexed journal Urban Science. This research journey has been both challenging and rewarding, involving countless hours of work, dedication, and collaboration. I am deeply thankful for the support and contributions of my co-authors and mentors who made this achievement possible. The effect of neighborhood urban morphologies on walkability has received much attention in recent years. In this vein, the main research question is: how do different neighborhood urban morphologies impact the level of walkability in urban environments, and what are the essential elements impacting the walkability index? Thus, this research aims to determine the impact of urban morphology on walkability in the city of Alexandria, Egypt, as a case study by utilizing spatial-multi criteria analysis. 👀Read my last paper published in the Geographical Journal 🌍In the top 5 trending papers in Geography 🎓https://lnkd.in/e5BFFuyv In this paper, I propose a political economy of place-based policies. I explore how elected politicians' decisions impact place-based policies (PBPs) and the resulting consequences. The paper emphasises that understanding the political factors influencing PBPs offers insights into their effectiveness and potential pitfalls.
