The Essential Records for a Science Technician: A Reflection on My Interview Experience A few weeks ago, I interviewed for a science technician position. During the interview, I was asked what records a science technician should keep. To my dismay, I fumbled through a less-than-satisfactory answer. After several weeks of reflection and some help from Google, I compiled a more comprehensive list of essential records that a science technician should maintain. Here’s what I discovered: 1. Inventory Records: - List of all equipment and materials, including chemicals and apparatus. - Details of suppliers and purchase dates. - Stock levels and reorder points. 2. Safety Data Sheets (SDS): - Up-to-date SDS for all chemicals and hazardous materials. - Information on storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals. 3. Risk Assessments: - Risk assessments for experiments and equipment use. - Records of incidents or near-misses and actions taken. 4. Maintenance and Calibration Logs: - Routine maintenance and calibration records. - Details of repairs and servicing. 5. Chemical Storage and Use Logs: - Logs of chemical usage and hazardous waste disposal. 6. Training Records: - Records of training completed by technicians. - Certificates for health and safety, first aid, and equipment training. 7. Timetables and Schedules: - Timetables for lab and equipment usage. - Booking records for practical sessions and equipment loans. 8. Preparation and Setup Records: - Records of experiment setups, including instructions and materials used. 9. Accident and Incident Reports: - Detailed records of accidents or incidents, including actions taken. 10. Audit and Inspection Records: - Records of audits and inspections, and actions taken in response. 11. Budget and Expenditure Records: - Records of budgets for equipment and materials. - Details of expenditure and budget tracking. 12. Legal and Compliance Documentation: - Records required by regulatory bodies, such as COSHH assessments. 13. Equipment Loan and Return Records: - Logs of equipment loaned to teachers or students and its return condition. 14. Disposal Records: - Documentation of the disposal of hazardous materials and equipment. 15. Environmental Monitoring Records: - Logs of environmental conditions in storage areas. Reflecting on my interview, I realised the importance of meticulous record-keeping for the smooth operation of a science lab, ensuring safety, compliance, and efficiency. I hope this list proves useful for those in similar roles. Feel free to connect with me for further discussions on best practices in science lab management or related topics. Let's support each other in our professional journeys! Best regards, Wayne
