Barrick’s Sustainability Strategy Delivers Real Value to Stakeholders In its Sustainability Report, Barrick Gold Corporation highlighted that almost $12 billion of economic value generated by its mines stayed within the operating countries, with significant investments in local communities and a focus on sustainability aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The company reported improvements in safety and environmental performance, including a 21% reduction in lost time injuries, a decrease in malaria incidence, and a 16% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its 2018 baseline, while also advancing biodiversity conservation efforts. https://lnkd.in/gyuHRaf5

The Pay-as-you-throw Scheme —— Roles of Government, Business and ESG (1) At this long weekend of the Lunar New Year with Valentine’s Day approaching, families and couples (hopefully, and good luck to those who are single, including myself…) are exchanging red packets and gifts. The pay-as-you-throw scheme has come to mind; how much societal costs are created? Would the scheme be able to alleviate the consequences of trash disposal and address the series of sustainability issues? The policy has been implemented in various countries but is new to Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, the logistics chain of waste disposal is formed by a series of stakeholders. While private property management companies or Owners’ Corporations collect rubbish from residents, governments typically only take over the rubbish after it has been sent to refuse collection facilities. Therefore, unlike most developed countries with a complex, integrated logistic system for collecting, transporting, processing, composting, and disposing of waste, we lack the social infrastructure to handle the disposal process. The core of the policy involves government intervention in the waste disposal system and enhanced recycling. From our previous experience, there were virtually no regulations regarding the use of plastic bags and recycling, and trash disposal was handled by private companies. Regardless of whether the scheme takes place, disposal companies are likely to remain the major executors of waste disposal for households across Hong Kong, and proper guidance is deemed necessary. To tackle these challenges, the government should further consider the complexity of waste disposal and implement supporting policies to facilitate the situation. For example, in Taipei, after a similar scheme was introduced, the municipal government increased the availability of locations for purchasing bags, and supermarket's originally single-use plastic bags turned out to be dual-purpose which could also used as rubbish bags. On the other hand, the issue raised a paradox: government intervention for enhanced efficiency versus advocating for small government for the same purpose. In a modern sense of capitalism or neoliberalism, a small government facilitates stronger market power, which is deemed to be more efficient; the invisible hand will gradually settle the issues within the society. However, the idea of a small government has led to lower efficiency in addressing social issues. For example, the overpricing of housing in the private sector and unresponsive pricing in the public sector, together with the nature of a small government, have led to the housing crisis in Hong Kong. In this case, the consequence of the scheme is deemed to be obvious—the increasing burden on property and waste management. In the absence of extra manpower to fully execute the policy, again influenced by the nature of a small government, we are likely to confront a series of challenges in implementation.
