PUMP CAVITATION Pump cavitation occurs when the pressure at the pump inlet falls below the liquid's vapor pressure, leading to the formation of vapor bubbles within the fluid. These vapor bubbles collapse as they move to regions of higher pressure within the pump, generating shock waves that can damage the pump's impellers, casing, and other components. This phenomenon results in diminished performance, efficiency loss, increased noise, and vibration. Here are a list of the causes of Pump Cavitation: 1. Low Suction Pressure: - Insufficient Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) available. - High elevation of the suction tank. - Long suction piping or excessive friction losses. 2. High Pump Speed: Excessive rotational speed of the pump can elevate the risk of cavitation. 3. High Fluid Temperature: Elevated temperatures can reduce the liquid’s vapor pressure, increasing the likelihood of cavitation. 4. Improper Pump Selection: Utilizing a pump that is not suited for the specific operating conditions or fluid characteristics. 5. Obstructions in Suction Line: Blockages or partially closed valves can reduce the pressure and flow rate at the pump inlet. 6. Excessive Suction Lift: Positioning the pump too high above the fluid source can cause insufficient suction pressure. 7. Air Entrapment: Air leaks in the suction line or at pump seals can introduce air into the system, leading to cavitation. 8. Inadequate Pipe Sizing: Using pipes that are too small for the required flow rate can cause high velocities and pressure drops. 9. Rapid Changes in Flow Rate: Sudden increases or decreases in the flow rate can create pressure fluctuations that lead to cavitation. 10. Poor System Design: - Inadequate planning and design of the pump and its associated system can contribute to cavitation risks. Prevent pump cavitation and ensure efficient and reliable pump operation.

❓How do you guarantee the safe operation of hard-to-reach valves inside a production area? Covestro, a leading manufacturer of polymer materials, was looking for a solution to safely operate manually operated butterfly valves in one of their production areas. ❎ The challenge: Permanent scaffolding was used to reach the manual gate valves. Pneumatic valve actuation was not an option, as pressured air was not readily available near the gear-operated butterfly valves. Located in an ATEX area, the valves could, not be operated with electric actuators. On top of that, the valves were in an area with limited access, so it was decided that remote operation of these manual valves was preferable. ✅ The solution: Covestro decided to install FlexiDrive remote operators to safely operate manual gate valves in one of their production areas. This had a significant impact on operator convenience and safety. By using FlexiDrive, operators don‘t need to go into the building anymore to access the valves. They also don’t need to get hold of access permissions, saving considerable time. As scaffold climbing is avoided, the risk of operator injuries is reduced significantly. In all, both access to the valves, as well as operating the valves has been made quicker and easier, saving valuable time and costs in the long run. The gate valves can now be comfortably operated from a safe distance, on a single service station. #processsafety #safety #valves #HSE #valveoperation
