https://lnkd.in/drd9-NsJ One of the advantages to rethinking screening is to come up with a better way to manage what's found at the time of screening, including the diagnosis of DCIS. (Or even Gleason 6 prostate cancer!) These are opportunities to re-cast a diagnosis in terms of whether or not someone's risk is elevated and whether or not something is warranted to reduce that risk. 🚨Wellness Event for Men! 🚨 I wanted to share an important community health event coming up that could save lives. Carver Federal Savings Bank is sponsoring a free mobile prostate cancer screening in front of the branch on 125th St located at 75 W 125th Street. Doctors from Mount Sinai Health System will conduct the screenings. This is such an essential service, especially for Black men. Here are some facts: ✨1 in 6 Black men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. This is one of the highest rates of any demographic group. ✨Black men are more likely to get prostate cancer in their early 40s. ✨The excellent news is that prostate cancer is very treatable if caught early through screening like a PSA blood test. When a prostate cancer should no longer be a prostate cancer ? Could a Gleason 6, grade 1 disease no longer be defined as a cancer was a debate held at GU ASCO today and this WSJ paper adresses the question. The debate is open, but the scientific jury is still debating the question. Would it change a lot ? Reducing screening biopsies, reducing risk of overtreatment, and likely reducing patient anxiety, on one end. But maybe putting some patients at risk (or not) on the other end. There is no consensus yet in defining such as an indolent state or not.
