The $658 million redevelopment of Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and the Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre is set to revolutionize paediatric health, research, and education in Australia. Interspan was commissioned to fully design and construct 49,000m² of suspended post-tensioned slab, completed over 74 pours. The scope included one basement level and 10 levels of clinical services, operating theatres, and patient wards. Through the efficient design of the hospital slabs, Interspan achieved a significant milestone: saving the client 300m³ of concrete. Work is continuing to progress on the development of a new Community Diagnostic Centre at the heart of Grimsby town centre. Five units within Freshney Place Shopping Centre are being transformed into a hub where you will be able to go and have a wide range of diagnostic tests, creating up to 150,000 additional appointments a year. Due to open to patients in autumn this year, we will be able to offer a range of services, including ophthalmology, non-obstetric ultrasounds and a mix of pathological and physiological tests, such as ECGs and X Rays. GPs will be able to refer patients to a centre, which are not only more convenient for patients but are also more efficient for staff and free up clinicians’ time to help further cut NHS waiting lists. Following the initial internal demolition phase, the full scale of the new centre can now be seen and, today, Great Grimsby MP Lia Nici visited the site to find out more. Adding that “people are really excited” about the development, Ms Nici was given the guided tour by project leads from the NHS Humber Health Partnership – the new group made up of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust and Hull University Teaching Hospitals Trust – finding out more about our plans to create approximately 60 new jobs and help local businesses by increasing footfall within the town centre. Group Director of Strategy and Partnership, Ivan McConnell, said: “There are great opportunities for people to grow and develop their skills. “We will need administration staff and clinical staff to carry out multiple roles. “There are also other benefits to the local community. If we’re seeing an average of 2,500 people a week, many of which are likely to bring people with them, that’s about 220,000 people hitting the shopping centre, going for a coffee or something to eat, visiting the local pharmacies, or popping into the shops. “It will also remove some of the need for people to go to our acute hospital sites, making it easier for patients and visitors to access the services they need and reduce the demand for parking.” More details about potential job roles at the centre will be released later in the year. Arts in Health/Mental Health MUST involve credentialed Art Therapists under many standards. These location-specific mural projects are simply Art. Artmaking and art exposure for inspiration or historic preservation are freely within separate “arts and culture” statutory domain. So hospitals are encouraging mural making. That’s fantastic. It will brighten up hospital walls. However, if consumer healthcare or healing claims are made, that is, by definition, and qualified workers’ rights, Art Therapy. Art Therapists train at least 8 years for our credentials. Please discern Arts in Healthcare (intervention, goal, and regulated profession) from gorgeous, inspired Art. Consumers deserve at least that.

Maury Regional Health (MRH) held a groundbreaking ceremony in conjunction with the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce today to celebrate construction on a new health park on Highway 43 in the Ethridge community north of Lawrenceburg. The three-story 60,000-sq.-ft. facility across from the FedEx Distribution Center will be home to Maury Regional Medical Group physicians and providers, including primary care and specialties. Additional services will include imaging, physical therapy, pharmacy, occupational health and a sleep center. Several independent providers on the medical staff at MRH have also expressed interest in leasing space in the new facility, bringing even more specialty services to the health park. South Niagara Hospital built on a foundation of Indigenous values (Part 2 of 2) “We wanted the hospital to be more artistic and less clinical, to make it as comfortable and healthy as possible for all people who have to use the space.” The community was again able to comment on and help finalize what the spaces and design would look like. “The end result is an integration between western medicine and Indigenous values,” says Porter. “The process gave the community a chance to understand that they have equity in the project and that it is their space.” When it opens, the hope is these spaces within the South Niagara Hospital will function as a community centre and will allow for Indigenous ceremonies to take place there, positioning the hospital to be a place of wellness and healing, and not just a place of sickness. While it is becoming more common for these types of projects to include the role for an Indigenous advisor or consultant, it’s not always the case. The South Niagara Hospital project has raised the bar from Porter’s perspective in terms of how projects of this scope and size should be incorporating Indigenous values.

Planning is well underway for a major expansion of Monash Medical Centre. The seven-storey tower, to be built above the existing Emergency Department, will include a new Intensive Care Unit, operating theatres, birthing suites, maternity beds, and more. Recently, some of our clinical leaders and consumers took part in an interactive workshop that will feed into the final building designs. The 1:1 scale projections give a practical sense of space, and help ensure we keep the patient experience at the heart of the design process. The Monash Medical Centre Tower Expansion Project will commence construction this year and is expected to be completed in 2029. It is being delivered in partnership with the Victorian Health Building Authority.

Breaking new ground for healthcare in North Kent. We are pleased to announce that works have officially commenced on the North Kent Community Diagnostic Centre at Livingstone Community Hospital, in partnership with Dartford & Gravesham NHS Trust. This new 1,160m² permanent modular facility will expand the Trust’s diagnostic capacity, enabling up to 130,000 additional tests annually. With construction well underway at our specialist manufacturing centre in Gloucestershire, we remain on track for a Summer 2025 handover.
