Yan Yean Reservoir holds a special place in Melbourne’s history as our oldest reservoir. Built in 1857, it has been a vital source of water for generations, receiving water from catchments north of Melbourne and supplying the northern suburbs, from Morang to Whittlesea. Today, Yan Yean continues to play a strategic role in meeting the growing water demands of Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs. That's why at Melbourne Water, we’ve completed a major upgrade to the Yan Yean water treatment plant, enabling it to supply up to 40 million litres of fresh drinking water per day. In addition, a new 20-kilometer pipeline and pumping station now connects the plant to the Bald Hill Service Reservoir at Kalkallo. This upgrade improves supply reliability for the northern suburbs and creates capacity to transfer more water to the western suburbs. 🎥 Watch the video to explore the rich history of this special reservoir and the critical role it still plays today. #YanYeanReservoir #WaterSupply #MelbourneWater
Fantastic to see such an important upgrade at Yan Yean Reservoir! It’s amazing how this historic site continues to support Melbourne’s growing needs. Exciting to see the investment in infrastructure that will keep the northern and western suburbs well-supplied for years to come!
