Last month, Colac Otway Shire Council, Meli staff, and Winifred Nance Kindergarten staff and students celebrated the official opening of the new play space. The project was made possible by a $300,000 Building Blocks Improvement grant from the State Government, complemented by more than $54,000 contributed by the council for the outdoor renovations. Happy faces all around, and just in time for the warmer weather! #Colac #ColacOtwayShire #MeliKindergartens

Garden Town Director, Naisha Polaine, has welcomed the news that both Harlow Council and Epping Forest District Council have adopted cross-boundary master planning guidance for over 3000 homes in East of #Harlow. One of four neighbourhoods proposed for the Garden Town, East of Harlow will feature 2600 homes on Harlow Council land and 750 across Epping Forest in addition to a 14ha health and wellbeing campus plus supporting infrastructure. The adoption of the East of Harlow Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), led by the Tanusha Waters (née Naidoo) team at Harlow Council, gives it material planning consideration status, meaning future site developers will have to follow the guidance around placemaking and building quality homes in order to secure planning permission. “We’re delighted that the East of Harlow SPD has been approved by our council partners as it embeds our vision of well-designed homes and creating a brand new sustainable community that will give the residents there a great quality of life in the future,” commented Naisha. “The East of Harlow SPD is a huge piece of work for the Garden Town project because it negates future risks like a piecemeal development that isn't held together by a cohesive masterplan or designs that don’t tie in with our wider principles around quality placemaking.” With local residents and stakeholder groups inputting into the SPD last year, East of Harlow is set to incorporate a wide range of community facilities, including nursery/pre-school facilities plus two new primary schools and a secondary school alongside the 3350 homes. “We realise that new communities like East of Harlow can make people feel nervous because it brings a level of uncertainty and change and that’s something we recognise,” said Naisha. “But there’s so much to be excited about around East of Harlow and the other Garden Town communities proposed for Gilston, Water Lane and Latton Priory. “The SPD has allowed us to prioritise the things that people are passionate about like safeguarding landscape features and the importance of green wedges, part of Harlow’s existing character, and a key Sustainable Transport Corridor to improve accessibility to cycling, walking and bus services.” The East of Harlow Supplementary Planning Document can be viewed via the link below. https://lnkd.in/eUQMtq2C #planning #infrastructure #environment #transport #sustainable #community #schools #education #masterplan

Next week is our CAN-opener where we will kick-off CANstruction 2024 and this a reminder to RSVP for the event. This is an opportunity to meet potential teams, sponsors, and volunteers. This year will be our 28th Canstruction Portland event which will be at Pioneer Place in mid-September. Our goal is to raise enough food and funding to provide over 60,000 meals to those who are food insecure in Oregon and SW Washington during our in-person event and ultimately, help make an impact on the issues that perpetuate hunger in our community. This year’s CAN-opener is on Wednesday, April 24th at 5:30pm at Mahlum Architects, Inc. We will have an online option for those who cannot attend in-person. We are trying something a little different this year by sending out the presentation out late next week to use the CAN-opener as a questions and answers forum. So come ready with questions and conversation! Last year, Oregon Food Bank saw a 14% increase in visits to meal assistance sites- and they are on track to see another 1.2 million this year alone. It is estimated that 1 in 10 Oregonians are facing hunger. Despite the climb out of the pandemic, rising costs of goods, housing, healthcare, and inflation generally has meant that we aren’t seeing a decrease in hunger. Your participation in and support of Canstruction is a vital way we can bridge the hunger gap for our community. Together, we can help create a resilient community with every can and dollar we raise at this event. And we need you to make the difference. We are asking for your continued support to help us grow Canstruction Portland and make a positive impact in our community as we return to an in-person event. We would love for you to spread the word about the event to your clients, coworkers, and friends. Please email us at info@canstructionpdx.org if you are interested in joining us. #Portland #Canstruction #canstructionpdx #oregonfoodbank #OneCanMakeaDifference #CanstructaWorldWithoutHunger #endhunger #nawicpdx #aiaoregon #aiaportland #ASCEOregonSection #agcoregoncolumbiachapter #OBOA #design #architecture #engineering #construction #art #designbuildfeed

The Warnell Tract development proposal in Pembroke, Bryan County, includes plans for a hotel, a drive-in bank, fast-food restaurants, and a substantial 2,000 homes. Situated on Highway 67 and Sims Road, the development will feature a mix of single-family detached houses, townhomes, and apartments across more than 500 acres of land. Approximately 53 acres are designated for commercial use. The project, spearheaded by Warnell-GSL Cattle Company LLC, is set to be reviewed by Pembroke's Planning and Zoning Commission on May 16 at Pembroke City Hall. ________ #neillrealtygroup #neillrealtygrouprealestate #annmarieneilldeals #realtyonegroupinclusion #realestate #realtor #pembroke #bryancounty #warnelltract #developmentproposal #residentialcommunity #commercialspace #planningandzoning #newhomes #mixeduse #cityplanning #communitygrowth #localdevelopment #historicrailroadtown #urbanexpansion #futureofpembroke

IMHO re: Native planting: Here's the thing about not "doing it right." In spite of the fact that (in my opinion) the categorization of native species will certainly change as the planting zones warm up, (TBH, I do love that I can now plant things in my previously too-cold zone) we need to be cognizant of the fact that natural heritage preservation is more than plant selection and design. It's so much more than that. If conservation areas are not prioritized (AND interpreted), we risk: • loss of already shrinking habitats for millions of creatures • destruction of wildlife corridors which support key critters • water quality deterioration • scarcity of food sources for both prey and predators that can cause regional extinction • degraded air quality • reduction of property values • ability to attract and retain residents, businesses, and a quality workforce • decimation of legacy forests, prairies, fens, and pollinator support • devastation of local food sources • operational and financial sustainability • eligibility for crucial funding • loss of outdoor recreation opportunities • lack of immersive educational experiences that bolster prioritization of conservation Nature deserves better. We can all play a role because - yes, we must "do it right." Kudos to you, Scott Martin & City of Chattanooga!

The City of Chattanooga Parks & Outdoors team installed this native planting mix a couple years ago - and tended, and tended, and tended. Anna Treadway-Mathis and Morgan McCormick Addendum - learning from Sofia Rudakevych that this project was also supported and curated by our friends at Reflection Riding Mark McKnight and volunteers - thanks all! And then boom. Immediate success! But I do have to ask our #SanFran friends Robert E. Doyle and Michael Boland, FASLA - are we doing it right? #cityinapark #chattanooga National Park City River City Company #tennessee #appalachia

Why did the villagers refuse to live in the beautiful homes made for them? Some years ago, somewhere in the world, a beautiful rehabilitation program was shaping up. The team was trying to design a colony of modern, self-contained homes for the families that got badly affected by floods. The government, the urban planners and the NGOs worked hard and completed building 50 homes for the affected families, in just two years. Everybody was excited to see how the villagers would respond to the beautiful houses with all the facilities, clean toilets, curated walkways and the plantation around the colony. When the villagers were invited to receive the keys to their homes, they were overwhelmed. With a lot of excitement they all went there and saw the project. To the government’s surprise, they all refused to live in those homes. Everyone, who worked hard to complete the project was shocked to hear that. The villagers were so afraid of the new homes, that they just wanted to run away from that place and were ready to live in their homes with broken walls. Why did the villagers refuse to live in those self contained homes, where they had modern facilities, hygienic toilets, free spaces, and gardens? What was the fear about? Any guesses?
