I have been pondering a crucial aspect of interviews lately, largely because I have seen candidates struggle through that aspect of interviewing, which is "to ask or not to ask questions from interviewers at the end of interviews?" As a talent recruiter, I have seen firsthand where the decision on whether to ask or not to ask questions has landed some candidates after their interview. Here's my take👇 Asking questions is more than just a formality, it is a powerful tool for both parties involved in the interview process. Here's why: 1️⃣ Demonstrates Engagement: It shows you're genuinely interested in the role and the company. 2️⃣ Cultural Fit Assessment: You can gain insights into the company culture and if it aligns with your values. 3️⃣ Clarification Opportunity: This is your chance to seek clarity on specific aspects of the role or expectations. 4️⃣ Highlights Preparation: Thoughtful questions reflect your research and preparation for the interview. 5️⃣ Creates a Dialogue: It turns the interview into a conversation, allowing you to build rapport. ❓ In an interview asking *thoughtful* questions is key to understanding the role, company, and hiring manager better. It will also help you to demonstrate your genuine interest and gauge if the fit is right. There are so much info online about the "perfect interview question"...but in reality, there is no "perfect" question. Rather, think of questions that are authentic to YOU, your interests and the role/team/company you are interviewing for. A lift off point could be asking about the team dynamics, key challenges or where the most value could be added. Try even researching the the hiring manager before your interview, ask them about their leadership style and vision for the team. Questions like, "Can you describe a typical day in this position?".. honestly, are pretty dull. Take real ownership over your interviews! Demonstrate your proactive mindset and enthusiasm to making an informed decision by asking genuine, authentic questions. And there I 2 things that have applied to all of them: 1. Well done on getting interviews. That isn’t easy in the current job market. Ask yourself what are you doing well to get these interviews… then keep doing it. 2. “Going with someone else that’s a better fit” isn’t feedback. YOU NEED TO ASK MORE QUESTIONS to understand this. Could you... Find out about the other candidate and why they were so good - “Why were they a better fit?” Find out if there was anything you could work on - “Was there anything specific I could have improved on to help me stand out?” Go specific, ask about certain points of the interview process - “Were there any questions that I messed up and how could I do better next time?” There are lots of questions you can ask and many ways to approach this.
