You’d be crazy not to take that job. That’s what everyone told me after I landed a coveted summer associate job. A job that, if you played your cards right, would land you a first year associate position. Making a LOT of money. I had to agree. I would be crazy to turn the summer associate job down. And even crazier if I later turned down the first year associate position… I thought about it, talked it over with my family and friends, and realized I couldn’t find a reason not to take this job. And yet… Something inside me KNEW this wasn’t the job for me. 🍿 SPOILER ALERT - I said yes to the summer associate job. And to the first year associate job. And I shoved that nagging feeling deep into the recesses of my mind. Looking back, I can see what happened here. I relied on logic and facts to point me towards the best career choice for me. Nothing wrong with that - in theory. But when intuition tried to tell me something about myself that no amount of logic could, I ignored it. And while I have no regrets in choosing that first job. I can’t help but wonder how different my career path could have been, Had I listened to my intuition in that moment. If you’re struggling to make sense of your legal career choices, and need someone to guide you, I’d love to help out. Melissa Brandman I could have written this post! Something told me not to accept the offer for the summer. But the money and the prestige were too enticing to say "No!". During that summer there were days I could barely drag myself out of bed. I was so fatigued. This was not normal for me. And what did I do when I was offered an associate position at the end of the summer? Looking back, I can see how the pressure of my law school classmates played into the decision. Now I am so much better at listening to my intuition!!

This is what my splenic human design tells me to do - listen to my intuition - even if it doesn’t make sense to my mind or to anyone else.

This resonates deeply! Logic pointed you toward the "smart" choice, but your intuition whispered it wasn't the right fit. How often we silence that inner knowing for the safety of external validation. Yet no amount of reasoning can replace internal wisdom about who we are. Honoring our intuition unlocks our true calling. Though you gained value from that job, imagining the possibilities had you trusted your truth is poignant. Your story inspires me to listen when my inner voice speaks, especially when it seems irrational. Thank you for this thoughtful reminder to align decisions with intuition and self-awareness - our guides to fulfillment.

I feel like many lawyers can relate to silencing their gut feeling and following their logic instead.

Money is a powerful influence, especially for young adults. Learning how to let go of that starts with “what is enough”. Money doesn’t equal satisfaction or happiness!
