I once had the pleasure of joining my husband for an olive oil virtual tasting (tastings being one of the cool perks of his job at the time). The experience started with an education to olive oil tasting – yes, like wine tastings and cheese tastings, olive oil tastings is a thing. The host held up a small blue cup. “These glasses are the traditional tools of olive oil tastings. They are blue to mask the color of the oil. Olive oil color has nothing to do with its taste or quality. However, we found that when people see the color, they assume traits about the oils that affect their perception. With blue glasses, you can’t see the color, so you can’t be swayed by expectation. Only then can you truly experience the traits of the oils.” Interesting… Human expectation based on assumption (i.e. bias) is so powerful, it effects what we taste and experience. The outcome itself is changed based on our expectation of what it should be. If we use little blue glasses to mask biases in order to experience the true traits of oils, what do we use to experience the true traits of people? #NoBias #humanresources #Diversity
wow that's new to me Melissa Dobbins
Nice analogy!
