Purchasing an apartment is one of the most important steps a family takes, but when coop boards turn people down, they routinely refuse to provide reasons. Disclosing the reasons is a matter of simple fairness. The failure to disclose makes it too easy for coop boards to continue to discriminate in violation of the City’s Human Rights Law. That's why we're advocating for enactment of the Fairness in Cooperative Homeownership Act. Read more at bit.ly/CoOpFairness, and add your organization’s name to support the act at bit.ly/48lrIgG.

Head of Tax at PKF Francis Clark, former CIOT Council Member, former Chapter Canon at Exeter Cathedral & Tax Writer of the Year 2012
An interesting summary. It all sounds more and more like a reversion to pre 1988 rules but with more regulation and penalties.

Fair Housing: A Cornerstone of Equal Opportunity ... All New Yorkers deserve the right to live in a home free from discrimination. The Fair Housing Act, along with New York State and City laws, prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, familial status, and other protected characteristics. Unfortunately, housing discrimination continues to be a persistent issue. This can manifest in various forms, such as refusing to rent or sell a property, setting different terms, or making false statements about availability. It's crucial to understand your rights and responsibilities under fair housing laws. If you believe you've experienced housing discrimination, it's essential to take action. The New York City Human Rights Law provides a one-year window to file a complaint. At the Law Office of Bradley D. Schnur, Esq. P.C., we are dedicated to protecting the rights of all individuals and ensuring equal access to housing. Whether you're a tenant or a landlord facing a housing discrimination issue, we can provide expert legal guidance. #fairhousing #equalhousing #housingdiscrimination #civilrights #realestate #legal #tenantrights #landlordrights #newyorkcity

During last week's class in The Legal Environment of Real Estate, we took the time to do a deep dive into fair housing laws and learn about the recent NAR settlement and its implications. The verdict in the Sitzer-Burnett case has been making waves in the real estate community since October. The case highlights critical issues around real estate commission rates, cooperative compensation, and the role of NAR's Code of Ethics. While the verdict found NAR responsible for certain practices, it's sparked a broader conversation about the fairness and transparency of commission structures. Learning about fair housing legislation has been an informative one for me, particularly because I recently submitted an essay for my business ethics class about the importance of adhering to fair housing laws and regulations and the consequences of discriminatory practices in real estate transactions. Understanding the federal Fair Housing Protected Classes, as well as state and municipal variations, significantly shaped my perspective on inclusive and fair real estate business practices. These rules serve as the foundation for guaranteeing that everyone, regardless of ethnicity, religion, disability, or familial status, has equal access to housing opportunities. #RealEstateEthics #FairHousing #IndustryInsights #InclusiveRealEstate #BusinessEthics Suzanne Hollander Esq.
