Bush said at its signing, "With today's signing of the landmark Americans for Disabilities Act, every man, woman, and child with a disability can now pass through once-closed doors into a bright new era of equality, independence, and freedom." Over the last three decades, the ADA has transformed physical spaces and expanded access to employment, education, and more. This, in turn, has opened doors - sometimes quite literally – to empower millions of disabled individuals to lead more robust, autonomous lives. Today, July 26, is National Disability Independence Day (DI), a day to celebrate the achievements of people with disabilities and to raise awareness about the importance of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA is a landmark civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications, and access to state and local government programs and services. Prior to the passage of the ADA, it was legal to pay a person less because of their disability, and it was legal for a restaurant to refuse to serve a person with disabilities. The ADA changed all of that, and it has made a significant difference in the lives of millions of people with disabilities. Today, people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. They can work, go to school, and participate in all aspects of society. The ADA has helped to create a more inclusive and accessible world for everyone. On this National Disability Independence Day, let's celebrate the achievements of people with disabilities and recommit ourselves to making the ADA a reality for everyone. #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)! In 1945, Congress, to help disabled veterans, designated the first week of October as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. Seventeen years later, the word "physically" was removed from the phrase to recognize the needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In the 1970s, a shift in disability public policy led to further amendments. For the first time, it was viewed as discriminatory to exclude or segregate people because of a disability, and activists fought for legal revisions. As a result, the US saw changes such as the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 and the designation, by Presidential proclamation, of a full month to increase public awareness of those with disabilities. The National Archives holds many records that relate to American citizens with disabilities. From personal letters to historic legislation, these records provide insight into efforts over the past century to establish programs and to protect the rights of people with disabilities. https://lnkd.in/gSkW96mh Image: President George H. Yeah but, no but, pretty clear when addressing pre-existing formally diagnosed disabilities just a huge chasm when it comes to, for example, occupation health surrounding Product Safety "induced visual repetitive stress injuries", vision loss, in the majority of DSE users since the 1990's. Today is the 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This landmark civil rights law was passed in 1990 and prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The law's purpose is to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications. The ADA wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and advocacy of the people with disabilities who pushed the disability rights movement forward. While today is a celebration of the 33rd anniversary of the ADA, it's, more importantly, a celebration of the community that made it possible. It is so incredibly important to recognize that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has enabled protections individuals with disabilities for some of the basic human rights like employment, housing, education, and more. There is still work to be done, and this should motivate us all to continue to create equality and inclusion for everyone including people with disabilities. Commitments I have made include using the language an individual chooses to talk about their disability, normalizing conversations about disabilities, and reminding myself and others of potential missteps (and reinforcing best practices) involving language, action, and inaction. While no person is perfect and there are bound to be mistakes made on the way, I am making an intentional effort to leave behind stigma, stereotypes, and relearn misinformation. #ADATurns33 #DisabilityRights #HumanServices #ProfessionalGrowth #ImplicitBias #CivilRights #Inclusion #Belonging #Equality #ADA #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct
