I haven’t met a single person who would willingly harm or kill a red-tailed hawk, a fox, owl or any other raptor however, when it comes to toxic pest control and the use of so called “bait boxes”, this is exactly what is happening. These animals balance Massachusetts’ ecosystems, but shocking numbers of these iconic creatures are sickened and killed after eating poisoned rodents, a process referred to as secondary poisning. The problem is an over-reliance on rat poisons such as second generation anti-coagulant rodenticides (SGARs) as a primary means of pest control. SGARs are too often used as a first line of defense, are ineffective without other measures, and present significant risks to wildlife and pets. The result is hundreds of raptors, foxes, and coyotes and numerous pets treated for critical SGAR poisoning, or killed in MA each year. We are harming the predators who actually would otherwise hunt and eat hundreds of rodents if we stop poisning them. A better solution is proper control of trash containers, improved sanitation, implementation of exclusion protocols, as well as decreased or elimination of rodenticides across Massachusetts through community organizing, landowner education, and direct advocacy. I urge my network to get involved, share this post and implement rodent proof solutions in planning, design and operations of our built environment.
