The Safety I and Safety II debate continues…
The New View, also known as Safety II, is reshaping our approach to safety, breathing fresh ideas into the profession and revolutionizing the workplace landscape. Meanwhile, the Old View, or Safety I, is facing criticism and even ridicule from some quarters as being "out-of-touch" and "out-of-date" for the modern workplace. Safety I is accused of being overly simplistic, reactive, and negative by advocates of the New View.
But amidst this clash of perspectives, the Old View proponents are holding firm, expressing skepticism toward the newcomers. "All talk, no walk," they say. They challenge the New View's lack of evidence and practical methods, particularly in addressing the day-to-day challenges faced by frontline workers.
However, amidst the debate, there lies an opportunity to merge these viewpoints into a comprehensive "Theory of Everything" for safety. Let's define "5 New Principles for (Just) Safety" that incorporate the best of both worlds, ensuring a holistic approach that addresses the needs of all stakeholders.
Let's collaborate and innovate for a safer, more inclusive future!
