Thanks American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) - A great collection of surgeons from around the world who have made a difference to our profession! Perhaps the most important thing for a surgron starting out is to have a #mentor and then mid career, a #sponsor. And it takes work on both sides. Work, effort and persistence on the part of the mentee and sacrifice, interest and affection on the part of the mentor. Part of my Interview: What Does the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) Mean to You: Innovation, Comaradarie, Excellence (ICE) My First Experience with AATS: A rather staid meeting, but one I felt needed an injection of young blood Why I became an AATS member: It is, after all, the primier thoracic society! And my mentor said I needed to! The most impactful presentation I have seen at an AATS meeting: Frankly, you forget presentations. What one remembers are the interactions. "You forget what people say but you don't forget how they made you feel". The first presentation I gave is: I think it was a video on robotic resection of a superior sulcus mass and our work on 3D printing of the trachea. Impacful paper I had published is: Our work on Tracheal bioengineering I plan on becoming more involved in the organization through: Active participation, getting young surgeons to join, helping with fundraising so we can continue the superb work AATS does at a global level. I have been supported along the way and very few things are as rewarding as supporting others! Finding the best doctor???!!! Long long time ago , an old man was sick, he needed the best doctor in town to treat him. Else he would not make it. He send his son in search of the best doctor in town. Now this town was peculiar, in front of every medical man’s house there candles burning 24/7, each candle for the patient who died under their care. Now he went around and in front of each doctors house there were hundreds of candles. So he roamed around and finally found a doc with one candle. He immediately caught hold of him and took him home. As you expected, he treated the old man and he died in a few hours. The son was perplexed, he asked “ Of all, you had the lowest number of candles and how come this result?” The young doctor wryly replied “ I just started practice yesterday”. 🤭 Look behind the commonly advertised surgical metrics (numbers, awards, degrees, etc). Factors like complexity of cases and the results in terms of long term results, ethics, team strength etc make more sense. 🤔 To be a good surgeon, it takes years of hardwork and a lot of dedication but to be the best surgeon, all you have to do is just say you are the best surgeon. 😛 Society of thoracic surgeons (STS) has a public reporting site which is a a good model #medicalexcellence #medicalethics #congenitalheartdisease

(It's not paranoia). VERY surprised not to see Neurosurgery on this list. Perhaps they don't have time to read and respond to Medscape surveys.....

New Original Research article in RRH: Informing the surgical workforce pathway: how rural community characteristics matter by Dorothy Hughes, Joshua Mammen, Tomas Griebling and Joanna Brooks. https://lnkd.in/gFT7Uzpu Surgical care is limited in many rural areas, with a shortage of general surgeons contributing to this gap in services. This qualitative study explores the meanings surgeons associate with community characteristics to better understand the role that community plays in surgeons' practice location choices. Reflections around themes of physical environment symbolism, health resources' relationship to scope of practice, and overlap of professional and personal roles differed between rural and urban surgeons. In an interview with Becker's Hospital Review, Liz Paxton, PhD, director of medical device surveillance and assessment at Kaiser Permanente, discusses Kaiser Permanente's device surveillance program. Created in 2001, the program has caught safety issues and helped improve surgical processes. She explained: "We set up this program as a quality assurance program, so that we wanted to first of all be able to identify higher and lower-performing implants. We wanted to be able to identify clinical best practices. We also wanted to identify patients at risk for certain outcomes so they could be optimized prior to the surgery, and really look at comparative effectiveness research. And so we established this program with the inter-regional chiefs, and we work very closely with them. We find a clinical best practice. We work with the chiefs' group to set a target and a goal and then provide feedback on utilization patterns and outcomes to change that clinical practice and advanced quality of care. And as a result, we've seen numerous examples of enhanced quality of care and changes in clinical practices." City of Brotherly Love —> Paradise Coast I’ve made a move. Talk about a change of scenery! I mean it in my bones… Jefferson Neurosurgery is rarefied air. I’ll always feel connected with, and grateful for, the luminaries there… many of whom have become close friends. But sometimes the stars align, and you can catch a bolt of lightning… if you’re willing to take the leap and forego the well-worn path. The Hospital for Special Surgery has launched a new venture in Naples FL, thanks to Sheeraz Qureshi, and I’ve joined to help build the spine program. Uprooting my family and moving to SW Florida was no small decision. Here are some reasons we took the leap: 1. I’m not satisfied just publishing research on value-based care anymore. I also want to build something in the real world: a one-of-a-kind musculoskeletal program that systematically offers the right treatment at the right time to the right patient. 2. I’m excited to help grow an ASC-centric, minimally-invasive spine practice that is focused on high performance, teamwork, efficiency, and the patient experience. 3. The leadership team at NCH is truly unique. It’s such a mission-driven and physician-friendly organization… thanks to the culture established by Paul Hiltz MHA FACHE and Jon Kling. 4. Naples isn’t the worst place in the world to call home! 5. Outcomes research isn’t just for PubMed. We’re going to measure our performance and costs, map our patients’ care journeys, and share this information with employers, payers, and the public. 6. Did I mention that I’m building this spine program from scratch, shoulder-to-shoulder with Nick Clark, MD… my brother-in-arms, former co-fellow, and MIS surgeon-extraordinaire? This is actually reason #1, #2, and #3! Creating something new is exciting but risky. Doing so with a close friend is special.
