Speaking at a careers night for junior doctors at the local regional hospital, trying to get them to become GP/Rural/RG. Some themes over the speeches seem to be consistent.
Almost all of the talking/thinking/physician like specialities seem to be in workforce shortage and offering lots of variety and life balance and opportunities for special interests. At least in regional areas this seems more true.
Less shortage with the ‘doing’/procedural (and of course they will point out they are thinking) specialties.
Do we think this is an effect of the kind of medical students we are choosing? Is it that the roles appear more enticing to doctors because of variety/challenge/hand eye skills? Are procedural roles desirable as they may be seen as less emotionally heavy?
Or perhaps it is because our funding system has long favoured procedures over talking and the market is just responding to years and years of price signalling?
Should we be looking at the way we fund the roles in medicine as the key part of overall reform? Feels like we are tinkering at the edges with all the blame being applied to ‘scope’ issues.
(Photo of one of the communities, Karumba, that I visit where we will never get a procedural specialist to join us).
Did you know? Some medical assistants transition into new careers as physical therapists. The knowledge you gain working as a medical assistant serves as a great foundation for a potential career change.

😟Is your GP provider inbox driving you to despair due to the extra hours you have to work each day to clear it?
🧐Read the testimonial below from a practice who is getting welcome relief from this with our medical admin service.
🤗Let our trained med admins take some of the workload from you so you can have more time to focus on your patients care and claw back some hours for your own time.
📍📍“The medical students have become an essential addition to our team and are helping us to keep the workload manageable and improve our processes. We are a small practice with 3000 patients and the medical students are responsible for a decrease of about 25 hours clinical admin time a week.
Our GP and NPs have more time for the patients and there is no more need for evening or weekend work anymore. Due to a consistent focus on clinic admin by the medical students our patient files are fully up to date, recalls are done in time and results are processed in time.
The work done by the medical students is of a higher standard than when done by a stressed or burnout GP.
The medical students have brought the joy back to the clinical team”.🤩

Program Highlight: MEDICAL ASSISTANT – According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of Medical Assistants is projected to grow 18 percent from 2020 to 2030, much faster than the average for all occupations. More Medical Assistants are employed by practicing physicians than any other type of allied health personnel. Medical Assistant work focuses on Ambulatory Care, which is the practice of providing medical services in an outpatient setting.
