Indiana employers take note: Investigative journalist George Joseph's recent report reveals troubling insights into Parkview Health System. Despite being headquartered in the nation’s most affordable city, Parkview's hospital prices rank among the highest in the country. Full report: https://lnkd.in/gVsETs6R This report uncovers many of the deep-rooted inefficiencies that exist across the U.S. healthcare system including: - The harmful effects of health system consolidation; - aggressive billing practices; - lack of transparency; - high and variable pricing; - cost shifting to commercial payers; and - inequitable access to care. When large systems dominate the market, the lack of competition leads to unchecked price hikes, leaving patients and employers without options. To ensure healthcare is affordable and accessible, we need meaningful reform that holds healthcare systems accountable. Legislative learning opportunity: if there are any veterans advocates out there who would like to see how the “hamburger is made” in DC (as one of my favorite Marine influencers Joey "Doc Talk" M. nicely put it), I have a rather large legislative project I plan to put together after the bar exam. It’ll be a summer project for Nearside Solutions, LLC. In short, if you’re interested in learning the following or simply want to tag along for a fun volunteer experience that will benefit veterans, know that I am halfway decent at lobbying work and familiar with navigating DC ;) so please feel free to PM me. • How to write an effective, data-driven white paper • How to communicate with congressional staffers • How to comprehend legislation, regulation, and laws • How to identify the ‘real’ influencers and the best approach to engage with them and their organizations • How to interpret lobbying reports alongside financial reports Background: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has recently been acknowledged for a ‘technically’ legal yet highly unethical practice of prioritizing federal union jobs (‘in-house’; avoiding the ‘easy button’) over the independent practice of medicine (community care authorizations). Credit goes to Concerned Veterans for America and Empower Oversight for publishing the recent freudian slip made by a senior VA official. It’s far more serious than I think many realize. In essence, the objective is either to curtail the regulatory authority of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ community care officials or to implement greater third-party, independent oversight of VA community care authorizations. I’m eager to discuss this further with anyone interested in understanding how VA community care functions in the upcoming months. The news this week that Fairview Health Services cut 50% of its staff chaplains is disappointing. As leading healthcare providers across the country are finally investing in #socialdeterminants, finally investing in interventions that address #healthinequities, and finally investing in the shift toward #vbc, it’s unfortunate and frankly confusing that one of the Twin Cities’ flagship healthcare institutions is disinvesting in members of the indersciplinary team that research consistently demonstrates: 🟰Advance culturally appropriate care 😁Improve patient experience ❤️Improve health outcomes What happened to 21st century medicine being person-centered and taking a bio-psycho-social approach? What happened to 21st century medicine rooted in evidenced-based medicine? Fairview’s statement in the Star Tribune article, “We will continue partnering with our region's diverse community of faith leaders and cultural healers to support our whole-person approach to health care now and in the future” conflates the role of clinically trained and experienced chaplains with community clergy. While community faith leaders are an important source of support for a person’s wellbeing, they are not a substitute for professional chaplains who are clinical peers to other interdisciplinary team members. They are not a substitute for chaplains who are trained and experienced in providing health care services in healthcare settings and who have deep experience in addressing existential distress within a clinical care plan and clinical context. Hopefully Fairview’s cuts are temporary as they turn around their financial position and arrive at a place where they can reinvest in 21st century healthcare. https://lnkd.in/gqDjuKAU #chaplaincy #chaplains #valuebasedcare #SDoH #spiritualcare SpirituWell Avi Olitzky University of Minnesota Medical Center #healthcare #medicine

Great news! The Senate just passed a bill that extends and increases Community Health Center funding! The House passed the bill earlier this week and it is now headed to President Biden's desk. Thanks to everyone who took the time to contact lawmakers! NACHC is grateful to Congress for recognizing with this increase in funding that the nation’s 1,487 health centers are a wise federal investment. In addition to increasing funding prospectively to $4.4 billion annually for health centers, the spending bill also extends and increases key primary care workforce programs – National Health Service Corps and Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education Program. The additional resources will allow health centers, which serve 1 in 11 Americans as the nation’s largest primary care network, to provide more comprehensive services to patients and bring primary care to more underserved communities across the country. 📌 Full statement: https://lnkd.in/eB28jxFY 📅 Next up: discretionary (short-term) funding expires March 22. Be ready for #ValueCHCs advocacy!
