In the digital age, the rise of platform-mediated work—both "ground work" (e.g., ride-hailing, delivery) and "cloud work" (e.g., freelancing on global platforms)—has reshaped the labor landscape. But are these workers protected? Eric Tucker warns that without ethical guidelines, such platforms can exploit workers through low wages, lack of benefits, and minimal job security. 🎙️ In our ASWAT: Speaker Series, Amal Mowafy dives into how policymakers, labor unions, and civil society can create a fair and equitable future for platform workers. From gig workers on the ground to remote cloud workers, ethical practices are vital. 🎥 Watch the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/dNiEkzi8 #LaborRights #DigitalTransformation #PlatformWork #EthicalGuidelines #ASWATSeries

I like certain aspects of remote work...but it doesn't allow for serendipity, which is so critical to breakthrough thinking. Take the fascinating origin story of how the current AI movement started. The most interesting part for me is the serendipity involved in how the 8 former Google employees started working together on it. It began in 2016 with a casual lunch conversation in the Google cafe. And the breakthrough came because veteran Googler Noam Shazeer "was walking down a corridor in Building 1965 and passing Kaiser’s workspace. He found himself listening to a spirited conversation." He thought it sounded like a fun smart group, joined it, and his contributions were critical to the project's success. It's funny....reading the story, you don't hear anything about KPIs or OKRs. It wasn't an intentional priority from above that drove the team. And none of it would have happened in a remote work environment...you don't have casual lunches, walk down hallways and overhear things if you're all at home isolated in front of a computer all day. Serendipity -- a critical part of work. #AI #culture #remote work https://lnkd.in/gCwZ7udK.

According to a new report from Slack, "the biggest thing holding employees back [from using AI in their jobs] is their mistrust over the new tech’s quality and accuracy. Only 7% of desk workers believe the outputs from AI are completely trustworthy to assist them in work-related tasks, and 35% find the results only slightly reliable or not credible at all." To help build trust, these solutions need clear quantitate metrics for eval, as well as experts in the loop to provide feedback and tune the system. This post might be useful to anyone else facing similar trust issues with your own use cases: https://lnkd.in/gXEqhxRg
