Great to meet the awesome ActiveXchange APAC team and (re)connect with new & past industry leaders in person at the National Sports & Physical Activity Convention. it was a great opportunity to chat about common challenges & opportunities, and the scope for sports & leisure data-intelligence to be deployed to improve outcomes across the industry. 'Working together' was one of the common themes & key learnings from the conference, echoed in case studies from Australia and abroad. A number of use-cases helped to highlight the positive results or immediate need for organisations to consider new approaches and or collaborations for long term benefit. The better organisations can 'join the dots', (and the data!) in a cohesive way, especially in the changing landscape with economic headwinds, the better the industry can meet consumer expectations and the better the results.  

Reflections on the Recent Incident Involving Vinesh Phogat at the Paris Olympics I feel deeply disappointed by the recent turn of events surrounding Vinesh Phogat at the Paris Olympics. The rules and regulations, combined with the decision made by the concerned authorities, have led to a situation that many, including myself, find hard to accept. It’s disheartening to hear some of the so-called expert opinions suggesting that Vinesh may have fallen short in some way. We must remember the sheer competitiveness of these sports; they demand not just physical prowess but also mental resilience and unwavering dedication. To suggest otherwise is to undermine the true nature of an athlete's journey. Focusing solely on weight as a criterion for disqualification, without considering an athlete's overall performance and potential, seems overly rigid. In such a competitive environment, wouldn’t it be more reasonable to introduce a margin of error, say 3% - 5%, to account for the human factors at play? Disqualifying a deserving candidate based on an absolute value, without room for flexibility, feels unjust and counterproductive. I sincerely hope the authorities will take this incident as an opportunity to reflect and implement meaningful changes that recognize the nuances of athletic performance. In my view, this situation highlights a lack of maturity and humanity in the current regulations, leading to the unfortunate exclusion of a deserving athlete. It is disheartening to see the narrative shift towards questioning Vinesh's abilities and character. This is a moment of collective disappointment for all of us. As a nation, we should stand by Vinesh and show our support. Our united backing could serve as a powerful statement, one that might mean more than any medal could ever signify. If we aren’t listening to and learning from our customers and our team, we aren’t maximizing our brands. I’d like to know from my network, what the most unique way you’ve sought out feedback from your customers and team? For the Olympics, their “customer” is probably a bit more expansive than most. However, every industry and every product can benefit from learning more about their customer base. A few weeks back I was glad to be a part of a focus group with Edmound Elzy where a specific portion of our customers discussed certain improvements that we had planned. We actually learned that, although still room for improvement, we were not nearly as far off the mark as we thought internally. This truly changed our own plans. It’s incredibly important to understand the perception of our own product and services from our customers’ eyes and not just our own. Doing so will be a game changer. So the first part of Paris 2024 is over, Tom Cruise is still quite the action hero, even in his 60s ... now the Paralympians will continue from August 28th. I read that the IOC has been very pleased that they managed to attract a younger audience this time and I said to my wife that it just seems to be the same - I didn't notice any difference in the coverage. She said something important - we watched it entirely online. I saw all of Paris 2024 on my phone, and even when watching on TV it was on YouTube or other on demand services. We didn't use any linear TV channel at all. No Globo, BBC, NBC etc... I saw people online complaining about the TV coverage and how they had to wait for some talking heads to finish before seeing a live event and it made me think that there is an enormous opportunity for many of these smaller sports events to finally get more global interest. What has held back minority sports in the past? A lack of TV coverage. Now it no longer matters. A small investment can now create a live broadcast, so the next time the national pole vaulting championship is taking place there is no reason for it to be ignored by everyone, except those involved in the sport - stream it live to YouTube and ask some sports influencers to let their fans know that it is on... Eventually even major sports franchises like the Olympics and Premier League will realise that they don't need broadcasters, but while they can keep on earning huge amounts selling the rights they are unlikely to change... #Sports #Broadcasting #Olympics #YouTube #SocialMedia #Streaming

Before thinking about Paris 2024's opening ceremonies being one week from today, let's flash back to Paris 1924, in many ways the first modern Olympic Games. The Paris Games of 1924 fit historically in the window of five enormously significant Olympic Games sandwiched between the first and second World Wars- Antwerp 1920, Paris 1924, Amsterdam 1928, Los Angeles 1932 and Berlin 1936. That the Olympics simply returned in Antwerp in 1920, after WWI caused the cancelation of the 1916 Games is probably significant enough. No Olympic truce for us 20th Century types. Amsterdam saw women on the track for the first time, Los Angeles marked a return to America and all that LA symbolizes in Olympic history, and Berlin is the culmination of the Olympics and political and social spectacle as Jesse Owens defied Hitler's ideals on supremacy as sport was a surrogate for statecraft. It is in these "sandwiched Games," the Olympics first began addressing the issues that defined the next one hundred years, gender, race, inclusion, opportunity and global politics of society not just sport. There is probably no better lens to see the modern Olympics coming of age than that of Paris 1924. Professional coaches, if not athletes. Yes, even tennis players like Rene Lacoste were amateurs, yes that Lacoste. It was the Olympics of Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell made famous in "Chariots of Fire," of Johnny Weissmuller and Duke Kahanamoku who remain famous even today anywhere there is water, and of Jackson Scholz and the incomparable Paavo Nurmi. 1924 was also the year that Coca-Cola began the longest continuously running sports sponsorship in history with the Olympics that will celebrate its centennial in Paris this year. These Games would mark Baron Pierre de Coubertin’s, the father of the revived Olympics, last as President of the IOC.
