We just had a Heat Awareness Day to learn how to Beat the Heat. We want to thank the Menlo Park Fire Department for providing the on-site training program. https://lnkd.in/gSDSfpHe Did you know that in California, employees are entitled to take a break if the temperatures are too high? Both Outdoor and Indoor staff can take breaks when temperatures reach specified levels to cool down and protect themselves from heat-related illnesses based on Cal/OSHA standards. OUTDOOR STAFF MEASURES: -Employers must provide fresh water and access to shade when temperatures reach 80 °F, degrees or higher. -Staff are entitled to take cool-down rest breaks in addition to their regular breaks whenever they feel the need to prevent heat illness. -High Heat Procedures: When temperatures reach 90°F or higher, employers must implement additional high-heat procedures. These include reminding workers to drink water frequently, ensuring effective communication, and observing workers for signs of heat illness. INDOOR STAFF MEASURES: -At 82 °F, employers must provide cooling areas & monitor staff for signs of heat illness. -At 87°F, additional measures such as more frequent breaks, adjusted work schedules, slower work pace, or cooling devices must be provided. California employers must proactively implement and maintain a written heat illness prevention plan and provide practical training for supervisors and staff, ensuring everyone is prepared and reassured.

The first time I had heat stroke was in Zion National Park in Utah. I was 26, and stupidly confident in my fitness level, so I hiked all day in 106F heat. I was hydrated, took breaks, ate snacks, and didn't rush. By the time I got back to the B&B, I was DOWN and spent the next few hours passed out in the AC with almost no vision, and hours of nausea, dizziness, and a pounding headache. Heat illness is scary, and it happens quickly. I can't imagine working on a construction worksite, moving heavy equipment, or wearing heavy protective gear in extreme heat. As we navigate a nationwide heat wave, it's imperative to implement a heat illness prevention program to keep your employees and your worksites safe. How do you develop said safety program? July is Extreme Heat Safety Month! The summer heat can rise to extremes, especially in a desert like Nevada, so here are a few tips to help keep you and your employees safe and protected from heat-related illnesses. ▪️Provide workers with water, rest and shade. ▪️Allow new or returning workers to gradually increase workloads and take more frequent breaks as they acclimatize or build a tolerance for working in the heat. ▪️Plan for emergencies and train workers on prevention. ▪️Monitor workers for signs of illness. ▪️Respond quickly by calling 9-1-1 if you suspect someone is in danger. Read more below. Creating a culture of safety is essential, especially during the summer. Implementing robust policies and training is critical to prevent heat illness. These policies should be clear, detailed, and effectively communicated to all employees. A PEO can give your clients expert guidance on developing comprehensive and practical policies to ensure the health and safety of their workforce. By letting a PEO guide your clients on policies, they can have peace of mind throughout the summer heat. #workplacesafety #employeesafety #heatsafety

Safety Moment: This month we will focus on Heat Stress. But what is heat stress? Workers who are exposed to extreme heat or work in hot environments may be at risk of heat stress. Exposure to extreme heat can result in occupational illnesses and injuries. Heat stress can result in heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, or heat rashes. Heat can also increase the risk of injuries in workers as it may result in sweaty palms, fogged-up safety glasses, and dizziness. Burns may also occur as a result of accidental contact with hot surfaces or steam. Workers at risk of heat stress include outside workers and workers in hot environments such as firefighters, bakery workers, farmers, construction workers, miners, boiler room workers, factory workers, and others. Workers at greater risk of heat stress include those who are 65 years of age or older, are overweight, have heart disease or high blood pressure, or take medications that may be affected by extreme heat. Prevention of heat stress in workers is important. Employers should provide training to workers so they understand what heat stress is, how it affects their health and safety, and how it can be prevented. Next up: Heat-Related Illnesses

🌞 What to Do When It’s Extremely Hot or Humid: Essential Safety Measures 🌞 When temperatures and humidity levels soar, it’s crucial to take proactive steps to protect workers from heat-related illnesses. Here’s a guide to staying safe in extreme heat and humidity: Increase Hydration: Ensure that workers have constant access to fresh, cool water. Encourage regular drinking, even if they’re not thirsty, to prevent dehydration. Implement Work-Rest Cycles: Schedule frequent breaks in cool, shaded, or air-conditioned areas. For high heat conditions, consider a work-rest cycle where workers alternate between work and rest periods. Adjust Work Hours: When possible, shift strenuous tasks to cooler times of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon. Consider rescheduling outdoor work to avoid peak heat hours. Use Cooling Measures: Provide cooling equipment like fans, misting systems, or cooling vests. Encourage workers to use personal cooling methods, such as damp cloths or ice packs. Monitor Humidity and Heat Indices: Keep track of Humidex, Heat Index, or Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) readings to assess heat stress risk and adjust safety measures accordingly. Educate and Train: Ensure all workers are aware of the signs of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Provide training on how to recognize symptoms and the steps to take if they occur. Modify Work Practices: Reduce the intensity of work, use mechanized tools where possible, and ensure proper ventilation to lower the heat load. Provide First Aid: Have a first aid kit readily available and ensure that workers know how to respond to heat stress symptoms. In severe cases, seek medical attention immediately. By taking these precautions, you can help mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat and humidity, ensuring a safer and more productive work environment. Stay cool and stay safe! #HeatSafety #WorkplaceWellness #HeatStress #SafetyMeasures #HeatManagement
