"I'm scared to tell my employer about my symptoms in case they get rid of me." I hear this from women at least three times every week. Why is it still happening? Organisations and managers have a legal (not to mention moral) responsibility to take care of their staff. Tribunals citing Menopause are tripling year on year. 39% of women who had time off work due to menopause, had cited anxiety/depression as the main reason rather than share their menopause status. (Fawcett Society) 13% of women are leaving work altogether, taking all that experience and knowledge with them. (Korn Ferry report 2023) STILL women are not getting the support that they need. It often only takes a few small adjustments to make a big difference on how someone experiences symptoms at work. Running awareness sessions and training managers is not very time consuming or expensive, so why aren't more organisations doing it? Priortizing the human beings, having human experiences, in our organizations is the right thing to do as humans. But it is also just good business. As leaders, we can't afford to lose the knowledge capital and skills that leave our organizations when we fail to care for the people bringing them. The immense cost of turn-over is well-documented. And those costs grow exponentially when the people we lead don't feel valued, because in addition to explicit turn-over costs, low morale leads to low productivity..... and these become self-perpetuating spirals. According to the British Menopause Society, 45% of women reported that menopause symptoms have had a negative impact on their work life, with a whopping 75% left feeling unable to disclose the real reason for their absence, citing privacy, embarrassment and unsupportive management as the top three reasons. 😓 This could mean more and more TALENTED women are leaving the workplace at the peak of their careers. Recent research found that 30% of women surveyed had taken sick leave because of their menopause symptoms - but only a quarter felt like they could talk to their manager about their absence. A survey by People Management found that 1 in 10 women have left work due to their symptoms - and with women over 50 being the fastest growing demographic in the workplace, education around menopause is key to supporting women to stay in work. Today is #WorldMenopauseDay 🌍 Great strides have been made in destigmatising menopause in the workplace and society at large. Research has shown that menopause is a reason why some women exit the workforce prematurely and so the monumental recognition from the Government on Budget day to offer free HRT to women suffering from January 2025, is a step in the right direction. There is lots employers can do to support menopause in the workplace: 🔹 Educate and raise awareness across the whole workforce, not just limited to women, to reduce stigma  🔹 Train leaders and menopause champions  🔹 Offer workplace adjustments (in consultation)  🔹 Have policies, EAP, and other supports in place. 🌟 It's time to talk about menopause in the workplace! 🌟 Did you know that 90% of workplaces have NO formal support for women experiencing menopause? 🤯 This is shocking, given that 67% of women in a CIPD survey reported a negative impact at work due to menopause symptoms. Understanding menopause and its effects is crucial. It's a topic often brushed under the carpet, but it affects countless women daily. Written policies and support networks are the most common forms of workplace support, yet they're still lacking. More alarming statistics: 53% of women have taken sick leave, and a fifth say their career progression has been negatively impacted due to menopause symptoms. Even more concerning, 20% considered leaving work, and 6% actually did! 🛑 Organisations need to take urgent steps to address this.
