Purposeful Senior Charity Executive I Homelessness Humanitarian I Australian of the Year Finalist 2022 I Australian of the Year nominee 2024 I Founder of the “OG” Beddown
I have witnessed first hand the profound positive transformative impacts physically, emotionally and for mental health a Shelter First approach has on the homeless even after just a few nights. We need local, state, territory and federal governments to look at the empty, under-utilised assets all around us that can be mobilised quickly to assist our people at this time which is a humanitarian crisis. People are dying, people are hurting, people are struggling - enough is enough. You have a voice, we need immediate action, we are stronger together. I will launch a LinkedIn advocacy group in the coming weeks, where I hope you will join me. Shelter first - no one left outside. #advocacy #weallhaveavoice #shelterfirst #nooneleftoutsode #homeless #humanitariandisaster

Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness, and survivors often experience barriers to finding safe, affordable, long-term housing for themselves and their children. During The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV)'s 2023 count of domestic violence services during a 24-hour period in South Carolina, most requests received were from adult and child victims needing refuge in emergency shelters, transitional housing, hotels, motels, or other housing. A new study published in the American Academy of Pediatrics Journal confirms that experiencing housing insecurity can have negative effects on a child’s long-term physical and mental health. ➡️ Read more from SC Public Radio: https://loom.ly/8226Koo #DVHomelessness #SupportSurvivors #AffordableHousing

NPR: A new way to support grandparents raising kids affected by the opioid epidemic. Alabama is using opioid settlement funds to support "grand families" — grandparents raising their grandchildren due to parental addiction. A new pilot program offers $1,000-$2,000 per family in select counties, though it's just a small step to help ease the financial burden. With opioid addiction often forcing grandparents to step in as caregivers, this initiative is the first of its kind in the U.S. and aims to keep kids out of foster care. Advocates hope other states follow Alabama’s lead in supporting these unsung heroes of the opioid crisis. #OpioidCrisis #Grandfamilies #FamilySupport #HarmReduction #Recovery Read the entire article here to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gTyHy5gK
